In "Figure It Out, Henri Weldon," Henrietta is starting 7th grade with lots of family and school pressures, a brain that doesn't do numbers, and is just trying to find her place in it all. Can she figure out how to make it all work? Why join me for this book? 1. It's a down-to-earth story of about the pressure to please everyone else, and the determination to be yourself. 2. Thoughtfully discussing books with others brings out more depth and meaning than a simple "I liked it" or "it was...

Learners will experience acceptance of their own unique neurotype and personality, and have the opportunity, through reading and discussion, to see the world through another's experience. This discussion may provoke some difficult questions around students' own feelings of inclusion and exclusion, however it is not intended as mental health counseling therapy for anyone. While this is a safe space to bring up questions and anxieties, we will not be delving into personal experiences or attempt to treat or provide therapy in any way.
I am neurodivergent myself, having four decades of life experience being Autistic, and I am an autism coach, helping Autistic and other neurodivergent kids and their families find and remove the hidden barriers to success and then build positive life experiences. I am also a certified teacher with several years of experience teaching middle and high school. I also am a graduate of the Great Books Program at St. John's College, a school where every single class, in every single subject, is taught in small group, socratic seminar discussion style, so I have extensive experience leading and participating in small group discussions on difficult, unfamiliar, and sometimes uncomfortable topics. As a high school teacher, I led my students in socratic seminar discussion regularly on a wide variety of books and topics.

Book Title: Figure It Out, Henri Weldon Author: by Tanita S. Davis ISBN: 9780063143579 Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/a/9847/9780063143579 Amazon: https://amzn.to/3sBznIx Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/Figure-It-Out-Henri-Weldon-Audiobook/B09YBN2HDV Description: Tanita S. Davis, author of Partly Cloudy and Serena Says, has written another funny, warm story featuring middle school and family life--all about the complex calculations it takes for everyone to balance the equations of their lives and what it takes to be part of a team while handling a learning disability. This middle grade novel is perfect for fans of From the Desk of Zoe Washington and A Good Kind of Trouble. Seventh grader Henrietta Weldon gets to switch schools--finally! She'll be "mainstreaming" into public school, leaving her special education school behind. She can't wait for her new schedule, new friends, and new classes. Henri's dyscalculia, a learning disability that makes math challenging to process and understand, is what she expects to give her problems. What she doesn't expect is a family feud with her sister over her new friends, joining the girls' soccer team, and discovering poetry. Henri's tutor and new friend, Vinnie, reminds her to take it slow. One problem at a time. If Henri Weldon has twenty-four hours in a day, and she has two siblings who dislike her four new friends, two hours of soccer practice, seven hours of classes, and three hours of homework . . . she has: A. No free time B. No idea how to make everyone happy C. No time to figure it out, Henri Weldon!
