A small group will help give your child more opportunity to practice the concepts from this class. Please take a look at the following list of book examples below to see if this class is a fit for your child.  Your child does not have to be in this grade to take this class. Your child is welcome to take this class if he or she is reading at a grade 6 level.  Please note, book levels will be adjusted based on class needs.

Level X+: The City Of Ember

     Guided Reading will help your child develop reading proficiency, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. We will be using digital stories in this lesson. In my Guided Reading lesson we will learn reading strategies and how to implement these strategies to support your child's learning. This small group class will allow your child more opportunity to engage in literacy skills. I choose engaging and meaningful activities to help support your child's literacy development, fostering a joy for reading.

We will be reading a grade 6 level book X, Y, or Z. Each book is different in every lesson. These are digital stories, there is no need to purchase anything. Students can join in any time, in any order. Please see below the following list of stories that we will be reading each week. Each class will follow the same format using a different short story:

* Your child will be introduced to reading strategies: breaking words into parts, stretching sounds out, looking for smaller words within a word, finding the base word, adding ending and beginning sounds to help solve tricky words.
* Your child will be introduced to a new story. We will do a book walk. This happens before reading. We look at the book title, cover and pictures in the story and make predictions about what the book will be about.
* I will go over some of the challenging words that will be in the story to help make the text more familiar for your child. 
* I will model how to read a sentence with a challenging word from the story, using a reading strategy.  
* Your child will take turns reading the story aloud, implementing reading strategies when needed with support from me.
* Your child will answer several comprehension questions. Please see the list of example questions. Each set of questions will be unique and based on the story.
* We will write a written response of a summary of the story. I will model writing, using paragraph formation.  As a class we will write part of the summary together. I will then add some vocabulary words onto the screen to help students add some descriptive words to their writing. Students are then encouraged to add a couple more sentences on their own to the summary.   Please have a piece of paper on hand for writing.


In each class, I will ask your child several comprehension questions to help support his or her learning.  Each class will have different comprehension questions.  Here is a list of some examples:
* How does the character feel? What words or descriptions does the author give to support your answers?
* What are you wondering? What questions do you have?
* Predict what will happen next.
* What caused (character in this chapter) to .....? What was the effect of ....?
* What was important on this page? Why?
* Summarize what you read. What's the most important part?
* How do Jack & Annie feel about their adventure?
* How does each character react to....?
* What do you think this word means?
* Why did the character say....?
* How are ____ & ____ similar? How are they different?
* Did the character change? Why?
