Thanks for wanting to know more! For this course, there is no experience necessary. A keyboard may be helpful, but also not necessary. Students will be taught the basics of music theory that pertain to playing the piano. Concepts will include, but are not limited to, geography of the keyboard, note types, the musical alphabet, time signature, and more. 12 lessons//12 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Week 1We will take some time to get acquainted with members of our class! We will open up with sharing favorite songs. Students will be introduced to the GEOGRAPHY of the black and white notes on the keyboard. We will also learn about the different TYPES OF NOTES through counting, clapping, and/or drawing.Week 2Lesson 2Week 2We will learn about NOTE STEMS and BAR LINES. Then, we will dive into PITCH (high and low) through various sounds (i.e. animals, vehicles, nature, etc.)Week 3Lesson 3Week 3We will apply our knowledge of pitch to the keyboard. Today, we will learn about DYNAMICS.Week 4Lesson 4Week 4Let's apply what we learned about dynamics and sing a song loudly the first time and softly the second time! Today, we will play a game called, "Name that Key!" We will learn about the MUSICAL ALPHABET through singing, drawing, and/or listening then guessing.Week 5Lesson 5Week 5Let's clap, snap, or sway as we sing a song! Today, we will play a SPELLING GAME with the notes we learned about last week.Week 6Lesson 6Week 6Today, we will explore TIME SIGNATURE. We will also make different patterns with the different notes we learned about. Students will get to share which pattern is their favorite!Week 7Lesson 7Week 7Today will be a review of everything we have learned so far. We will play a MATCHING GAME to ramp up the fun!Week 8Lesson 8Week 8Today we will learn about the STAFF and CLEF SIGNS. Students will have the opportunity to draw the clef signs if they choose.Week 9Lesson 9Week 9Let's sing a song SLOWLY for the first time and QUICKLY for a second time! Today we will learn about 2ND INTERVALS, TIED notes, and SLURS.Week 10Lesson 10Week 10Share your input on creative ways to change a song! Today we will learn about 3RD INTERVALS, QUARTER RESTS, then we will get silly make fish faces (if you wish).Week 11Lesson 11Week 11Let's try some of the creative ideas you shared for a song! Today we will learn about measuring 4TH INTERVALS and the difference between WHOLE and HALF RESTS.Week 12Lesson 12Week 12Today we will learn about 5TH INTERVALS. We will end our course with a fun SPELLING GAME as we COMPOSE our own song! Students will have the opportunity to share what they liked best about this course.
Students will improve their understanding of music theory including geography of the piano, types of notes, pitch, dynamics, the musical alphabet, intervals, and rests.
