****Please read each book's description so that you can decide if you want your child to read the book. You can do an internet search for each book's summary. Kirkus Reviews is a good website, and so is Common Sense Media.**** Welcome to the Middle Grades Book Club! In our weekly book club, your child will read and discuss different types of fiction novels and engage in book-related activities. Books open a child's world to new ideas, vocabulary, cultures, and activities, and they allow kids to experience all sorts of adventures. Besides building a love of reading, book clubs have many benefits: Children read books they might not normally read. The book discussions promote deep thinking about a book. Kids get useful practice with forming opinions and using the text to help support their thinking. Literacy skills such as reading comprehension skills, analyzing plot, themes, characters, and setting are developed by reading. Each book club meeting our book discussion will begin with a focus activity such as a quote from the book, a scene from the book, or a description of the setting or a character. Our group discussion will include discussing literary elements (characters, plot, setting, themes, etc.) and the reading response questions for the assigned chapters. We will also do a book-related activity after our class discussion. If our discussion runs long, the learners may need to complete the book-related activity outside of our club meeting. Supplies for the activities will be posted a week before the next club meeting. Each week, reading response questions for the assigned chapters will be uploaded to the classroom. The purpose of the reading response questions is to encourage readers to interact with the book with the goal of increased comprehension. They can be printed, cut out, and glued or taped into the reading response journal. The learners may create a reading journal for our book club to track the books they are reading in our book club and on their own. A PDF of pages to make a reading journal is in the classroom so that it can be printed to be used with a two pocket folder with 3 hole punch prongs, or it can be used with a 3 ring binder. Your child may join our book club at any time because we start a new book about every four weeks. If your child joins after we have started a new book, we will review the previous chapters from the previous meeting or meetings. ****All learners must be enrolled in the club to be fair to the other enrolled learners.**** Thursdays 1 pm Eastern time October 24 The Losers Club by Andrew Clements Discuss Chapters 1-12 October 31 The Losers Club by Andrew Clements Discuss Chapters 13-24 November 7 The Losers Club by Andrew Clements Discuss Chapters 25-37 November 14 Peanut Jones and the Illustrated City by Rob Biddulph Discuss Part 1 Activity: Mini Drawings November 21 Peanut Jones and the Illustrated City by Rob Biddulph Discuss Part 2 Activity: Artist Drawing December 5 Peanut Jones and the Illustrated City by Rob Biddulph Discuss Part 3 Activity: Creative Writing Activity December 12 Peanut Jones and the Illustrated City by Rob Biddulph Discuss Parts 4 & 5 Activity: Secret Codes 2025 January 9 Gangsta Granny by David Walliams Discuss Chapters 1-11 January 16 Gangsta Granny by David Walliams Discuss Chapters 12-22 January 23 Gangsta Granny by David Walliams Discuss Chapters 23-Postscript Thursday 12 pm Eastern time October 3 It's Boba Time for Pearl Li by Nicole Chen Discuss Chapters 1-10 Art activity October 10 It's Boba Time for Pearl Li by Nicole Chen Discuss Chapters 11-20 October 24 It's Boba Time for Pearl Li by Nicole Chen Discuss Chapters 21-30 October 31 It's Boba Time for Pearl Li by Nicole Chen Discuss Chapters 31-Epilogue November 14 A Split Second by Janae Marks Discuss Chapters 1-7 November 21 A Split Second by Janae Marks Discuss Chapters 8-18 December 5 A Split Second by Janae Marks Discuss Chapters 19-epiloge

Hi I'm Miss Robyn, and I enjoy reading! I also enjoy hiking, gardening, cooking, and science. I have taught children of all ages as a public school teacher and as a private instructor with my local home school organization. I have taught reading and writing to elementary age children and literature & composition classes to middle school and high school students. I am a certified teacher in the state of Texas. Since October 2020, I have taught with Outschool and I have met a lot of wonderful, interesting kids! My husband and I homeschooled our two sons from kindergarten through high school.
