In this flex class, students will learn how Meteorologists study weather and learn how to read weather maps as well! This course will run for 6 weeks and allow learners to learn some of the fundamentals, including: Week 1: Tools to study weather (anemometers, barometers, sling psychrometers, hygrometer, rain gauge, wind sock, wind vane, thermometer) Week 2:Air systems and air pressure( high vs. low pressure, maritime vs continental, polar vs tropical , and the jet stream) Week 3: Air Fronts...
Students will learn about how meteorologists use weather fronts, air pressure, air systems, and more to predict weather on maps and why they may not always be accurate.
I am an elementary and middle math and science teacher having taught elementary science for 2 years, and have taught middle school science for 8 years from 6-8th grade. I am licensed as a science teacher from 6-12 grade, with a Masters in Science Education. I like making learning relate to real world experiences so students can connect to material easier than standard memorization. I review in a flow pattern that starts with basic information and expands into complex information to assist students with retention.

Students will be provided hand-outs for notes to keep for their possession each week, along with printable resources for activities. Students will also need a pencil to complete activities.

In this class, we will discuss weather, including hurricanes and tornadoes, but not how they function. We will only discuss the movement of storms and how meteorologists study their possible paths. We will not discuss the devastation of storms, but factors that could increase intensification so meteorologists can predict possible strength increasing. Students will receive supplemental videos that support learning on occassion from youtube (streamable in the Outschool Classroom), and digital activities (Google jamboard,docs,slides,forms).Creation of accounts is not needed to complete activities.
Students will have access to notes for their records, as well as handouts.
