수업 소개

영어레벨 - A0
미국 3학년 - 7학년 학년
레벨 Beginner
What will be taught: I will teach Foundational Math Skills during this tutoring session. However, I have taught all topics in my 19 years in the classroom so am willing to expand the scope of the work.

Teaching Style/How I Teach: Play… so your student is relaxed and feels comfortable making mistakes. Hands-on interaction (shared Canva Whiteboard) so we can both discuss and demonstrate our work. I practice the Socratic Method to guide and encourage my students to discover the rules of the world.

Class Structure: After a few moments of check-in to settle your student, I will begin by asking your student to perform a math problem while I watch them work through it, to detect and understand what skill they are missing. If I determine they are proficient I will move to the next level of difficulty and skill set. When a missing skill is detected, I will teach them that skill before moving on. I will assign them practice outside of class to reinforce what they have learned with me. At our next meeting, I will review the previous missing skills to make sure they have retained what they learned, and then proceed with the process of finding the next missing skill.

Teacher-Student Interaction: I have two cameras so my students can always see my face and hands. We will share a Canva whiteboard so we can both write and work on the same ‘sheet of paper’. I also will share a ‘Google Slides’ file with them to help them build their glossary, math notes, and tool chest. I will create video clips upon request, so your student can have them for after-hours review. I have created numerous games to teach and reinforce math skills. They will be used when appropriate.

I have taught Special Education students for 19 years: 13 years in a self-contained Severe/Profound and Cross Cat classroom for TUSD, three years at a Private School specializing in Autism, and then Online with Amphi School District. I meet the child where they are, and target exactly the skill that is missing to allow for the greatest growth.

My 19 years of teaching have revolved around the individual's education. Each child is unique and their needs are too. Often our students have missed school or had a "bad day" and so have missed out on a critical lesson… why not teach them the lesson they have missed... when they are receptive... before moving on to the next lesson... so they do not get lost along their march to graduation and adulthood.

I participate in school-wide decisions that inform my teaching: For a school budget committee, my job was to interview business owners and department heads in the community to ask what skills we, as a school, needed to focus on. Their response was: teach them to be nice, communicate clearly, and work as a team (play nice with others). "Technology changes quickly. I'll teach them how to shoot the laser" one research scientist told me.

I teach play: We have to get along with those who are older, younger, and different, so I specifically teach play. I have come up with many games over the years that target the topic I am trying to teach.

I teach perseverance (delayed gratification): Being wrong is ok, and not the end of the world. How to reflect on what happened and how to make it better next time. Trying again. Being kind to others who have made a mistake. Being a safe friend and co-worker. Working towards a goal. These are soft skills that take time and effort to teach but create a much stronger and more employable individual.

I teach communication: In my capacity as a self-contained teacher, 80% of my students might be nonverbal and need to use another means of communication. Often when the students came to me, they had severe behavior issues because they had no other way to communicate their needs, wants, and interests. Once they learned the power of pictures, sign language, or words to get what they wanted, their behaviors dropped away. My favorite moment is when a child tells me “No." That means they can assert control over their world. Teaching any child to appropriately say "No" or request something, will allow them to successfully navigate adulthood.
