Class Experience for Math Adventures: Building Strong Foundations in 1st Grade

Welcome to  Math Adventures: Building Strong Foundations in 1st Grade, where young learners will embark on an exciting journey through essential math concepts! This course is designed to engage students with hands-on activities, interactive games, and real-world problem-solving to build confidence and a strong math foundation.

What Will Be Taught?

In this course, we’ll cover the essential math concepts for 1st grade, all taught in a fun, approachable way. The topics include:

- Number Sense: Recognizing, counting, and writing numbers up to 100, and counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
- Addition & Subtraction: Solving problems within 20, exploring different strategies (counting on, using number lines), and understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction.
- Place Value: Understanding tens and ones, comparing numbers, and building a foundation for more complex math operations.
- Measurement: Using non-standard units to measure objects, understanding length, height, and weight.
- Shapes & Geometry: Identifying and describing basic 2D shapes, understanding sides, corners, and symmetry.
- Time & Money: Learning to tell time to the hour and half-hour, identifying coins, and solving basic money-related problems.
- Problem Solving: Applying math skills to real-world problems and developing critical thinking abilities.


This course is designed to be **highly interactive** and **student-centered**, ensuring each child receives individual attention while enjoying the learning process. Here's how we structure the class:

- Duration: Each class will be 1 hour long, held weekly.
- Class Format: A mix of direct instruction, guided practice, interactive activities, and fun games.

- **Lesson Breakdown:** 

  - Introduction & Warm-up (5-10 minutes): We’ll start each lesson with a quick review of previous concepts and a fun math warm-up (like a counting game or a shape scavenger hunt).

  - Main Lesson (20-30 minutes):
I’ll introduce new concepts using **visual aids, virtual manipulatives**, and engaging examples. We’ll explore the topic through guided practice, allowing students to participate actively.

  - Interactive Practice (10-15 minutes): Students will practice new skills through **interactive games** and **hands-on activities** that reinforce the lesson. This could include using virtual number lines, playing math games, or completing simple worksheets.

  - Exit Ticket/ Demonstration of Learning (5-10 minutes):** We’ll end with a quick discussion or review of what we’ve learned and address any questions. This is an opportunity for students to share what they’ve discovered and for me to ensure everyone is confident with the material.
