Students will start off by choosing a MarioKart racer to be their piece. They will then take turns identifying different numbers in different formats (numerals, tally marks, fingers, ten frames, and dice) from zero all the way to twenty via Mario-themed flashcards. There is a race-track board and each student will get the chance to identify 7-13 different numbers in turn (depending on how many students have signed up to take the class). Every student will get the opportunity to complete the race.

Subitizing is the rapid recognition of groups of items, without counting. This is more efficient than counting each individual item and saves time in math tasks. This game is a fun way for students to further learn subitizing skills that will better their understanding of numbers and enable them to be more successful during future math endeavors.

It is helpful for students to already know these numbers, and at least be slightly familiar with them and counting, but it is not necessary. The class will start with a basic explanation of how to identify numbers through tally marks, ten frames, and dice (with the assumption that students already know and understand finger counting and reading numbers). I will make sure that they are able to answer each question and not be embarrassed by lack of knowledge.
