In this 4-week, self-paced class, learners will explore 4 different marine animal adaptation through the creation and sharing of activity based learning projects. Each week learners will be provided with text and video video based content on the following ecosystems. Week 1: Sea Stars This week learners will explore the mechanisms of a sea star's hydrostatic skeleton by simulating it's grip with a turkey baster. Week 2: Jellyfish This week learners will explore the anatomy of a jellyfish...

Week 1Lesson 1Sea StarsIn this lesson, learners will explore the mechanisms of a sea star's hydrostatic skeleton by simulating its grip with a turkey baster. Assessment of student achievement is conducted through project completion, short answer reflection, interactive learning lesson and quiz.Week 2Lesson 2JellyfishIn this lesson, learners will explore the anatomy of a jellyfish stinging cell by creating a model. Assessment of student achievement is conducted through project completion, short answer reflection, interactive learning lesson and quiz.Week 3Lesson 3Shark ScalesIn this lesson, learners will explore shark morphology and denticles by creating a model using egg shells. Assessment of student achievement is conducted through project completion, short answer reflection, interactive learning lesson and quiz.Week 4Lesson 4Fish FloatsIn this lesson, learners will explore the adaptations of a fish swim bladder by creating a model. Assessment of student achievement is conducted through project completion, short answer reflection, interactive learning lesson and quiz.
Upon completion of this class learners will be able to: -describe the mechanisms of a sea star's hydrostatic skeleton. -describe the common characteristics of sea stars and their relatives. -describe the anatomy of a jellyfish stinging cell. -describe the common characteristics of a jellyfish. -describe the structure and function of a fish swim bladder. -describe the structure and function of shark denticles. -identify key adaptations of marine organisms in relationship to their environment.
I strive to create learner-centered, integrated lessons that relate content to students’ lives. I believe that my educational background in the field of marine science, professional teaching degree and extensive experiencing developing/delivering educational programs for all ages, will generate a class experience that fosters learners' appreciation for our oceans and environment. Please see my teacher profile page for more detailed information on my education and teaching experience.
