One of my favorite things to do in life (other than teaching and learning) is to travel. Although vacations are wonderful, my kind of travel is "living like a local".

Back in 2008, I was working on my master's degree in Human Development & Family Sciences with a focus on gerontology (the fancy word for the study of aging). I came across a travel opportunity I just couldn't resist. So in the summer of 2008 I headed to Belize for six weeks to volunteer at Octavia Weight - one of the three nursing homes in the entire country. While there I lived with a local woman who made delicious food and taught me how to wash my clothes in a 5-gallon bucket. During the week, I lived like a local and on the weekends I became a tourist and did all kinds of fun things.

In 2009, as I was finishing up my degree, I headed back to Belize for another six weeks to do my internship at the National Council on Ageing. My project was to provide Alzheimer's disease education to professionals and family caregivers so they could better understand, and help, the older population. My time was spent working and learning about a variety of people with different ethnicities, languages, and beliefs. Although I didn't do much sightseeing that time, I did eat a lot of delicious food, met wonderful people, and enjoyed the beauty of the country.

My time there allowed me to learn about other people, learn about myself, and develop an appreciation for people who have different experiences from me. Now I want to share some of my fun experiences with kids so they too can become culturally aware and inspired to learn about others - no matter where they are in the world.

I will provide printables each day that students can either print out or keep on their computers to show to their family and friends.
The information provided for this class will come from Encyclopedia Britannica (www.britannica.com), World Atlas (https://www.worldatlas.com/), and my own personal experience. My focus is to teach children about the diverse culture of Belize and provide examples to demonstrate to students the importance of learning about and respecting people who have different life experiences from ourselves.
