Welcome to Let's Learn Cursive: Beginner Cursive With Ms. Katelynn! Why learn cursive? Cursive is so much more than a fancy way to write. It turns on specific regions of the brain linked to memory and the acquisition of new information. Cursive allows for the brain to see words as a whole unit which in turn helps solidify spelling. It eliminates letter reversals because all lower case letters start on the line. Cursive is also much quicker than print which comes in handy for taking notes. This class will teach the absolute basics of cursive starting at the very beginning with learning proper posture, pencil grip, and paper position. Each week we will begin with a warm up to get our hands ready to write. Warm up will include: hand and wrist stretches, inchworm, pencil flips, and practicing the different kinds of strokes needed for cursive. Then we will learn how to write two letters a week. Once we know at least one vowel we will learn how to connect letters together to form words. That means some weeks we will work on letters and words. This class will use a combination of Easing into Cursive and cursive worksheets provided. We will group the letters by how they are formed: swing ups, small and tall loops, push up and over, and under, over, stop. We will say the letters as we write them to create a multisensory experience. We will also practice writing letters with our eyes closed. Students will need a pen, pencil is fine but pens will allow them to write smoother and darker without added pressure, any worksheets provided, and lined paper to practice writing letters independently. A white board is also recommended for warm up and practice. The pace we follow will depend on the learners. If we need more time working on a letter, group of letters, or words we will do that. Ms. Katelynn has been a teacher for the past eight years. This is her third school year on Outschool. She has experience working as an online teacher and a brick and mortar teacher. She is a certified special education teacher with experience working with students in kindergarten through grade five. She has been trained in strategies to support students with dyscalculia. She loves to teach and share her passion for learning with her students.
