In this ongoing class, beginning readers will practice and review the alphabet and their sounds. We will also review skills and strategies that beginning readers should have, such as rhyming, syllables, and tracking words. We will also work on simple sight words and CVC words. Sample 4 week schedule: Wednesday, September 27th Review various letters and letter sounds. Learn sight words: the, a. Read Big by Cheryl Ryan and The Backyard, by Nora Voutas with these sight words. Practice reading and writing short /i/ words: it, bit, sit, fit, mit, hit. Wednesday, October 4th Review various letters and letter sounds. Learn sight words: the, a. Read Little by Cheryl Ryan and The Chicken by Racheal Rice. Practice reading and writing short /a/ words: at, cat, bat, mat, sat. Wednesday, October 11th Review various letters and letter sounds. Learn sight words: like, the. Read I Like by Bill Danardo and Farm Animals by Cheryl Ryan. Practice reading and writing short /e/ words: -et, bet, set, met, wet, let. Wednesday, October 18th Review various letters and letter sounds. Learn sight words: like, the. Read The City, by Veronica Angel and The Fort by Rus Buyock Practice reading and writing short /o/ words:-ot, hot, not, pot, lot, rot. Please note: *** These classes are 25 minutes, but sometimes run longer (30 minutes) if there are more students. Your child is always welcome to sign out early. *** Your child should know most letters and letter sounds, however we will review a variety of letters each week. *** Join anytime, these classes do not build upon each other.

My name is Ms. Shannon, and I am so thrilled to be a teacher on Outschool.

I offer various classes including, but not limited to:
First Grade Reading, Kindergarten Reading, Phonics, Sight Words, Beginning Writing, and Private Tutoring. I also offer private reading assessments and tutoring 1:1. I can help you determine what level your child is reading on and help you create a plan for progress. If you don't see an active class available, feel free to reach out and request a time.
My Professional Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from UNCW in 1996. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Early Childhood (ages 3-8), Elementary Education (ages 8-12), and as a Reading Specialist. I also hold an NBCT (National Board Certified Teacher) license and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. I have over 25 years of teaching experience and have been teaching online since 2020.
I currently homeschool two of my three children and work from home.
My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe meeting a student where they are is essential to helping them learn successfully. I offer a differentiated approach to allow all learners an opportunity to participate. I believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning. I want all children to love reading and learning in general. I am passionate about children gaining confidence in their abilities and feeling successful.
