Welcome to the Mythical World of Percy Jackson and his adventures seen through the book “The Lightning Thief.” In this exciting 8 week class students will dive into the world of Greek Mythology through the lens of “Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief's” book. By the end of the class students will have a deeper understanding of Greek Mythology. Students must obtain a copy of the book for class which also will be handy as a homework tool. Week 1Lesson 1Intro to Greek MythologyIntroducing students to Greek Mythology and where it came from and what it is all about. Students will be introduced to the book Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Who is Percy and an overview of his story. There will also be an introduction to some of the Greek gods and goddesses from the story. Students will be assigned chapters 1-3 to read outside of class.Week 2Lesson 2Humans vs. DemigodsWe will begin by discussing the first three chapters assigned for outside reading. Is Percy human or is he a son of a Greek god? Why in Greek mythology there are greek gods and what important roles did they play. We will discuss Percy’s trials so far and do a family tree worksheet on the Olympian gods. Read chapters 4-6 outside of class.Week 3Lesson 3Heroes vs, VillainsThis lesson will begin by using the knowledge students have gained from chapters 4-6. Are there any heroes in the story yet? We will look at some of the Greek heroes such as Achilles', Hercules, and Perseus. What their missions were. The Greeks also included villains and some were even part of the main gods family. Read chapters 7-9Week 4Lesson 4Mythical Monsters and CharactersDiscussion of chapters 7-9 then students will get a chance to design their own monster and characters and create a small text about how they could fit into what we have read so far. Read chapters 10-12 outside of class.Week 5Lesson 5Who was the god of the underworldStudents will discuss Hades (Lord of the Underworld) and his part in the story and Greek myth.Students will then write a small paragraph including Hades as the character.Week 6Lesson 6The Hero’s JourneyStudents will discuss Percy’s steps with Annabeth, and Grover. We will plot the journey using a mapping skills.Week 7Lesson 7Final Book DiscussionTheme, characters, and plot will all be discussed as students finish the book. This will also include a question and answer session.Week 8Lesson 8Students Final ProjectStudents will present an art project, a piece of writing, or any form of expression using what they have learned through this class.
