Students will improve their spelling and vocabulary each week. Students will also improve their reading fluency skills so that they are reading at an appropriate speed with good pronunciation and proper intonation. Students will learn to write sentences/paragraphs to show their comprehension and analyze what they have read. Additionally, students will use their writing and oral skills to discuss their opinions and extended knowledge of the subject matter.

The majority of the students' homework will be completed in Nearpod. Students will need to sign up for a FREE login at Nearpod.com.  Students will have the opportunity to practice their new vocabulary words and definitions through Nearpod assignments. At the end of the week, the student is expected to take a vocabulary and reading comprehension quiz using Nearpod. Required homework will be approximately one hour per week at the most depending on the students' ability to memorize their vocabulary definitions. A weekly at-home packet will be provided after the first class of every week so that students can practice what they have been learning in the classroom. The packet is optional but provided as a way to further enhance what the students are learning in class.

Students will be assessed weekly based on their vocabulary and reading comprehension quiz score and their participation in the class. Parents will receive an end of the week email on the Friday following the last day of class.

We will be drawing from popular chapter books and non-fiction books in addition to articles pulled from the internet. Students will be provided with the title and author of the books if they are interested in buying these books or borrowing them from your local library. However, no purchase is necessary. Everything the student needs for the class will be provided in class. Students will need a login for Nearpod.com. Nearpod is free for students and a code will be provided for each assignment.
