Welcome to Part 1 of Learn to Read! In this class, students will learn how to decode words to begin reading using synthetic phonics. Students will learn how to blend letter sounds together to unlock the code to reading. Students will use hands-on activities to make learning fun! This class will run for 8 weeks and will give your student a strong foundation in reading. Each class will build upon the last to help your student progress systematically to learn reading fluency. The emphasis in this class will be on synthetic phonics. Students will also learn some sight words. These are words that do not follow the normal rules of phonics. Students will meet 2 times per week in class. They will have activities and homework to complete for the two days they are not in class. These should be completed with the help of an adult to help your student complete them successfully. Students will also have a story to read every day during the week to help build their fluency skills. These stories will build in complexity as they begin to read more complex words. To be successful in this class, your student should know the letter sounds for each letter in the alphabet. They should know the short sound of each vowel.

Students will need guidance from an adult when reading independently out of class time. It is recommended that the student practice their story of the week every day as well as completing in between class activities.
Students will also need parents to prepare materials before class to ensure success in class. This class uses an Orton Gillingham style of teaching. This includes many manipulatives for students to use to engage their entire brain while reading. Parents will need to cut and prepare the materials before class time as we will not have time to cut them during class. With young students cutting can take a majority of the class time and I hope to have everyone prepared so our class time can be spent learning to read.

Students should have a variety of school items at their disposal in class. This would include pencils, colored pencils, crayons, markers and a dry erase board. Some activities in class may involve cutting. Students and their adults should cut the items out before class. All students should be supervised by an adult while using scissors. Students will also use glue in this class. It is best to use glue sticks to minimize mess and clean up time during class.

Many of the activities in this class use an Orton Gillingham approach to assist all learners to be successful in my classes.
