“Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech or of the press.” With just a few words in the 1st Amendment, the Supreme Court has created a large and complicated interpretation of the law. We will strive to understand what it all means in this 10-week course. The Freedom of Speech is often considered the most important right protected by the Constitution in the United States. Is that really the case? We will strive for a deeper look into what is a right, what is meant by words such as freedom, speech, and silence as we decide for ourselves how important the freedom of speech is to our society and look at how the Supreme Court decided important cases. This class will center around important questions about the Freedom of Speech, and uses real Supreme Court cases to gain clarity and deepen our understanding of an important topic. Used properly, this course will challenge your thinking and help you understand why rights and protection from government overreach are so important to our lives as citizens of hte United States.
학습 목표
- Students will learn the basic elements of the freedom of speech
- Students will learn to look for the little details, think through a problem, and not settle on the first answer that jumps to mind
