Entertainment law is all about the needs of the individuals and companies within the entertainment industry.

Entertainment law is not a separate area but an area that draws from a lot of the basic areas of practice of law: contract law, corporate law, intellectual property, technology and regulatory law, and other areas that will intersect with the entertainment industry.

With Movie law, we will get a basic understanding of the structure of how movies are produced, how do the various people involved protect their assets and intellectual property, and how are movies financed.

With Television law, we will look at the shift in the business model (from broadcast to cable to streaming) to see how that affects the people involved, and we will look at contracts for actors to see how they are paid for their services.

With Music law, we will look at copyright law, which is how the artists protect their intellectual property, and we will look at examples of how live performances, recording, and publishing are all connected legally.

Finally, we will look at the publishing industry for books to see how authors and publishers negotiate their contracts and how self-publishing has affected the industry.

Each class will be a combination of court cases, contracts, discussion, and questions that we will use to create a deeper understanding of the entertainment industry.
