Kwanzaa Uncovered: The Heart of the Seven Principles is an ongoing weekly series designed to explore the seven principles of Kwanzaa, one principle at a time. Each week, we will focus on a specific principle, discussing its significance, history, and how it can be incorporated into our daily lives. The principles of Kwanzaa—Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith)—will be covered in depth through a variety of teaching methods. Each class will cover topics such as the cultural history of Kwanzaa, the meaning behind each principle, and practical ways to apply these principles in our personal lives and communities.

Kwanzaa is a nationally recognized holiday that is celebrated by nearly 12 million people of African descent across the world. Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday, not a religious one, so people of all faiths can and do celebrate it. People of other races and ethnicities can also celebrate Kwanzaa, as the values of pride, unity, and community that are present in Kwanzaa can apply to any group, family or community.
This engaging and interactive class invites children ages 7–12 to explore the Nguzo Saba—the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa—as a guide for everyday living, community building, and cultural pride. Through storytelling, creative projects, and discussion, students will learn the meaning and history behind each principle and how they connect to their own lives, families, and communities.

The course emphasizes cultural authenticity while also incorporating diverse perspectives from respected scholars and practitioners of African and African American traditions. Students will explore the work of Dr. Maulana Karenga, the founder of Kwanzaa, while also engaging voices such as Gwynelle Dismukes, Maitefa Angaza, and community educators who emphasize cultural resilience, family unity, and collective responsibility.

We honor the diversity within the African diaspora by incorporating different cultural experiences and expressions, including traditional African values, Afro-Caribbean practices, and African American community wisdom. Students will be encouraged to reflect critically, express creatively, and celebrate themselves and their heritage through the spirit of Umoja (Unity) and Kuumba (Creativity).

Here's an overview of the topics that will be covered:

The class is structured to be interactive and dynamic, with a mix of group discussions, creative arts activities and games to help reinforce each principle and foster a fun, collaborative environment.

My teaching style is conversational and student-centered, encouraging open dialogue and deep reflection. I believe in creating a safe and welcoming space where learners feel comfortable engaging with the material and each other. Learners will interact with me through Q&A sessions, group discussions, and creative arts activities, allowing for a more personalized and engaging learning experience. By the end of the course, students will not only have a deeper understanding of Kwanzaa and its principles but also practical tools to incorporate these values into their everyday lives.
