Class Description
In this 15-week course, we will learn essential kitchen and food safety skills, from basic hygiene practices to safe cooking techniques. Throughout the course, students will explore topics like knife safety, preventing cross-contamination, and how to cook simple meals. We will cover important skills such as reading food labels, storing food safely, and understanding healthy eating habits, all while making sure students have fun in the kitchen! By the end of the course, your child will have the confidence to help in the kitchen while following safety protocols and making nutritious food choices.

Class Experience
Each week, the class will focus on a specific topic related to kitchen safety and food handling. The lessons will be structured to include a combination of direct instruction, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and interactive discussions. Through video clips, live demonstrations, and step-by-step explanations, students will learn how to safely use kitchen tools, handle food properly, and prepare simple meals.

The class will be very interactive, with students participating in hands-on activities during each lesson. Expect weekly opportunities for learners to practice what they’ve learned, whether through cooking challenges, quizzes, or group discussions. You can also expect to engage in fun, educational games like quizzes and virtual cooking competitions to test your knowledge and cooking skills.

Teaching will be structured to be both informative and engaging, with opportunities for students to ask questions and receive personalized feedback. I’ll keep the lessons lively by using videos, slides, and interactive activities. I will also encourage students to participate in discussions and share their cooking experiences or questions with the group.

How will I teach?
The class will be taught through a blend of direct instruction, video demonstrations, and hands-on practice. I’ll explain the concepts clearly, use visual aids, and demonstrate proper techniques to ensure students understand the material. Students will also have opportunities to ask questions, share their experiences, and collaborate with their peers. I will use short, engaging games and quizzes to reinforce key concepts and ensure that learning is fun and effective.

The class will be highly interactive, with lots of opportunities for students to engage with the material and each other. We’ll use Google Slides for presentations, and videos to demonstrate tasks. Regular feedback and guidance will help keep students on track and encourage participation.

By the end of the course, your child will feel more confident and independent in the kitchen, equipped with the knowledge to cook safely and make healthier food choices.

When this course ends on week 15 it will start back over starting at week 1 again.

While all safety protocols will be explained in detail, younger learners may find these concepts initially intimidating. All media content used in class, including video demonstrations, will be age-appropriate and focus on safe cooking practices. No third-party tools requiring accounts will be used in this class, so there will be no need for any external registrations or privacy concerns. Parents are encouraged to be present during any hands-on cooking activities at home to ensure safety.

There are no specific prerequisites for this class. It’s open to all learners ages 8-12. No prior cooking experience is needed, but a basic understanding of following instructions and willingness to engage in hands-on activities is helpful.

Kitchen Tools:

Cutting board
Child-safe knife (or regular knife with supervision)
Measuring spoons and cups
Mixing bowls
Spatula
Vegetable peeler
Tongs or tongs-like tool (for handling hot foods or foods in boiling water)
Cooking Ingredients:

Basic ingredients for hands-on activities (I will provide specific lists a week before each hands-on session):
Bread, cheese, ham, or preferred sandwich fillings
Eggs
Simple vegetables (e.g., carrots, cucumbers, lettuce)
Fresh fruit (e.g., apple, banana, grapes)
Basic snacks (e.g., yogurt, crackers, etc.)
Other Supplies:

Apron (optional, but helpful for keeping clothes clean)
Notebook and pen (for taking notes and keeping track of important safety tips)
Technology Requirements:

A computer or tablet with internet access for live lessons and video demonstrations.
A Zoom account (free version is fine) for attending live classes.
A camera or webcam for interaction during the live sessions, especially for showing completed activities.
I will provide a one-page handout summarizing kitchen safety guidelines during the first session. All other materials are expected to be provided by the students or their families.

Please note, some ingredients or tools may need to be purchased ahead of time, especially for hands-on cooking activities. I’ll provide more detailed ingredient lists at least one week before each relevant class session.
