Kindness starts with you! This is the one underlying message of our object lesson. After reading a book about kindness, we will decide if we want to be a cotton ball person or a sandpaper person. We will discuss the difference between the two and how they relate to the way we act and treat other people. In order to help students decide if they would like to be a cotton ball person or a sandpaper person, we will do a hands-on activity giving an example of each. (Some supplies needed for each...
Learn/Discuss ways to show kindness. Distinguish between cotton ball words/actions and sandpaper words/actions. Distinguish between a cotton ball person and a sandpaper person. Decide which kind of person they would like to be (cotton ball or sandpaper).
I am a certified teacher who loves to make learning enjoyable for students. We will learn by doing and having fun!
Cotton balls (any number-one is fine) Small piece of Sandpaper (Course: 60-80 Grit-rough will get the point across better) Paper Crayons, markers, or colored pencils Optional supplies for the hands-on activities: Paper plate Tube of toothpaste (we’ll only use a small amount) Bowl (glass or ceramic-will be adding milk) Milk (small amount in the bottom of bowl) Food coloring (2+ colors work best) Q-tip Liquid dish soap (small amount needed) Paper towels/Napkins (for hands if needed) Apron or old shirt-optional (if you worry about clothes getting messy-it’s not expected)

Parents are encouraged to be nearby not only in case there are any issues (i.e. technology, etc.) that need to be addressed, but also to help with the hands-on activities (one of them could be slightly messy without parental supervision). Please check the supply list for the supplies needed for this class. If your student would like to just watch the activities, they do not need to bring the supplies. Listening to the lesson will help you know the phrases and sayings from the book and class so you can remind and encourage your child(ren) to show kindness. This will also help to make a school to home connection. Please make sure your child knows how to find and use the Mute/Unmute button. There are times when a student’s background is noisy. Their mic will be muted by the teacher so the class and the learning and thinking processes are not disrupted. Your student will then have to unmute their mic in order to talk. Zoom will not allow teachers to unmute mics anymore. *Each child must be registered to attend the class; however, siblings/friends can share a screen to participate in the class.
