I trained as a special ed teacher in college and quickly realized that the way public schools handle learners with needs beyond what's offered in the standard curriculum wasn't aligned with creating a sense of belonging. In search of way to create a sense of belonging for kids who truly need it, like those labeled as having special needs, I spent time teaching martial arts. I found this model to be too rigid. Both I and the learners I most wanted to reach needed more creativity - more room to discover themselves. I began writing and publishing children's books - though I call them timeless tales as they have meaning for adults as well. Several of my 74 titles have been award prizes for their contribution to the field of children's literature, and I've led similar story time groups during book events.
