Sora Sept 2022 Syllabus This course is designed for highly motivated students who are ready to progress to Level 2 Japanese after completing the level 1 series. It runs from Sept 7th, 2022, to July 20th, 2023. It is composed of six six-week long cycles. Course at a Glance: This course will help students to continue to master their reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Japanese. Each week (consisting of two classes), students will learn approximately: 5-15 words, and 1-2 grammar points, and up to 4 kanji. Note that for the first three weeks, students will be learning the Katakana alphabet instead of Kanji, and that at the end of Cycle 6, there will be two weeks of no new vocabulary as we review cycles 1-6 vocab. Each month there will be a Cultural Focus. Classes may incorporate a mixture of activities, games, discussion, or multimedia (such as slides, videos or audio). Each lesson (and homework) will incorporate vocabulary or grammar from previous lesson(s) so that material is constantly reinforced. Students will be assessed through homework, quizzes, tests and projects. Homework given will not exceed 60 minutes per week. Japanese 2 will also have much more participation than Japanese 1 as students are expected to become more comfortable speaking Japanese. **NOTE** - This course is a PRIVATE course designed for a specific high school and thus is not open for public enrollment. I have been heavily steeped in both Japanese language and culture for over 20 years. Graduating with honors, I have a BA in East Asian Studies and two minors in Japanese language and Philosophy. I studied Japanese in Kobe, Japan briefly as an exchange student. In addition, I lived and worked in Sendai, Japan after graduation for two years as an elementary and middle school teacher.
Upon returning home to the U.S I have tutored both children and adults in Japanese, successfully ran a Japanese conversation club for several years, and worked in a Montessori environment with children ages 2-12. I have given several presentations to elementary and middle school students about both Japanese language and culture and currently teach Japanese for an online high school. Lastly, I have successfully taught my daughter Japanese.
In addition, I recently graduated in 2021 from the University of Nottingham with an MA in Applied Linguistics, receiving the highest academic award of Distinction. As a graduate student, most of my research was concentrated in nonverbal communication, such as, body language, gesture and humor. Other areas of research were second language acquisition, culture shock, and psycholinguistics. 리뷰
