수업 경험

I am a citizen of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas and an experienced Native educator. I have been teaching online and in person for almost a decade, am a paid consultant with multiple curriculum companies, am on a committee in Texas to develop a Native Studies course for the state, and I train teachers and educators on how to identify Native stereotypes in educational materials and how to select better materials. I have several highly rated classes on Outschool that deal with sensitive topics and history and I do my best to teach these topics with care for my students.

We will be talking about western expansion from a Native perspective, so this will include topics like: invasion, land theft, disease, wars, massacres, death, genocide, human trafficking, slavery, extermination campaigns, forced assimilation, environmental destruction, racism, Native rights violations and issues, etc.
These subjects are very sensitive and can be upsetting. I approach these topics with sensitivity and care.

Historic images and paintings are used in the slideshows - the ones I use are relatively mild, but do include historic photographs of Native prisoner of war camps and internment sites, historic photographs of the destruction of the buffalo herds, drawings and paintings of historic events like hangings, massacres, and wars (not gory or too detailed), images that include weapons, one historic photo of a mass grave (Wounded Knee site), and images of modern poverty and rights violations. Nothing is extreme or over the top, but the content exists because those are the topics we are talking about.

I will be using several videos - most of them have no concerning content, however I will use a 2 minute clip of the mini-documentary called Honor the Treaties by Aaron Huey. This clip has videos of poverty and a short (seconds) clip of a shirtless man lying down in gravel. I will be using multiple clips of a video from the National Museum of the American Indian in which there are personal stories of forced removal as well as the use of a racial slur.

This class is not for sensitive learners and I have a strict age limit set for the class.

I will be posting additional resources, videos, and articles in the classroom after each class. Please be sure to review these resources or explore them with your student. Videos will be embedded in the classroom.
