수많은 예외가 있는 규칙을 배우고 단어를 암기하는 것이 효과가 없다면 새로운 접근 방식을 시도해 볼 때입니다. 이 수업은 학습자의 단어 이해와 철자법 작동 방식을 변화시키는 동시에 어휘력도 향상시킵니다.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction and the History of English
We'll start by learning the history of English and how we have arrived at where we are and which factors have influenced our spelling. We'll also start dismantling the idea that the job of English spelling is to represent sound, and we'll examine several examples of words that prove that the primary purpose of the spelling system is to represent meaning.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Morphemes, Phonemes and Graphemes
Students will learn the definitions of phonemes, graphemes, and morphemes and how they work together to spell words. We'll also learn about Word Families and how words from the same base will share connections in meaning and spelling.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Suffixing Rules Part 1
We'll take a closer look at suffixing and figuring out the suffixing rules for dropping a silent e and changing y to i. We will learn to think like "Word Scientists" to make hypotheses and then use words to test them and come to conclusions about the suffixing rules. We'll learn how to use flowcharts that help us apply the rules of suffixing.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Suffixing Rules Part 2
We will continue to work with suffixing rules for doubling a final consonant and practice applying the suffixing rules by building word with a matrix.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Different Types of Bases
We will take a closer look at word families and start getting practice finding bases in words. We will learn the difference between a free base and a bound base and see how words from the same word family that share a base will also always share connections in meaning and spelling, regardless of pronunciation.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Word Building
We will review and practice the suffixing rules by building words from both free and bound bases.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Four Questions
We will learn about four questions we can ask to help us determine how a word could be spelled, and we'll practice breaking words apart into their morphological pieces to see how determining a base word can help us understand a word's meaning and spelling as well as to find related words. We will learn how to use resources like etymonline to do research into a word's history.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Content and Function Words
In this lesson, we will learn that we can group words into one of two groups, and see how the conventions for each of these groups can impact the way many commonly-used words are spelled.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Etymological Markers
We'll learn that graphemes can have jobs in words other than to make sounds, and continue to see how a word's history and origins can impact its spelling.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Words from Greek and Latin origins
Greek and Latin are two major sources of words we still use in modern English, and in this lesson we will look at some of the bases and roots that come from these ancient languages.
 Week 11
Lesson 11
The Difference Between Bases and Roots.
We will investigate the relationship between words that have obvious connections in meaning yet seem to have unexplainable differences in spelling. Consider word pairs like divide/division, write/written, one/only - and many others! By the end of this lesson, learners will understand the relationship between words like these.
 Week 12
Lesson 12
Summing It Up
In our final lesson of the class, we will learn more about how a word's history can impact its spelling and learn about the function of etymological markers. We'll also review and summarize our learning from the class.
At the end of this class, students will be able to:
-break words apart into prefixes, bases, and suffixes
-understand how to identify the graphemes, morphemes, and phonemes that create a word
-understand that words that are connected in meaning will also be connected in spelling
-understand how adding a suffix can change the spelling of a base word, for example by dropping a silent -e or doubling a final consonant
-use provided flow charts and matrices to make decisions about spelling when adding a suffix to a base word
-approach spelling problems by "thinking like a scientist," making a hypothesis about a word, testing their hypothesis, and seeing the results
-be able to do research into the etymology of a word to learn more about its meaning, origin, and spelling patterns
-know how to do research into a word's morphology and etymology
I have had extensive professional development in the ideas presented in this class, including working directly with Peter Bowers and WordWorksKingston to learn the principles of Structured Word Inquiry, and I have seven years of experience teaching this content in a classroom setting. I have also been involved in the creation of resources for colleagues to use in their teaching as they implemented SWI in their own classrooms.
숙제 제공
We will plan to complete practice work together during the class time, however there may be some weeks when we run out of time to finish the work together, and students may need to finish some of the work on their own. It should take students no longer than 10-15 minutes to complete.

It is recommended for students to keep a small notebook for taking notes, writing word sums, and keeping lists of prefixes, suffixes and bases that we discover during the class.
Parents, be aware that this class could turn your child into a logophile (not sure what this word means? Check a dictionary, think about the parts that make up this word and see if you can think of words that are related in meaning and spelling. Now you're on your way to becoming a logophile yourself!) and will make them notice and ask questions about words and the spellings of words all day. You have been warned!
The content of this class is based off the work of Melvyn Ramsden, Peter Bowers, Sue Scabetta Hegland, Fiona Hamilton and many others. Some of the resources used were created by Peter Bowers and used with his permission. More about his work with the WordWorks Literacy Centre can be found at: https://wordworkskingston.com/WordWorks/Home.html

During the class, we will use online resources including dictionary.com, thesaurus.com, and etymonline.com. Students will not need to access these sites directly, I will share these via screen share.
