주당 1시간. Students are expected to either have read or to read TREASURE ISLAND as we progress through the class. There will be a brief intro to the class which will include highlights of the novel, however, the student is responsible for keeping up with the reading. Hopefully, the students is motivated, through improved role playing, to become as familiar with the novel and the time period as possible.
학습 평가
Through the Pillars of Adventure students will earn experience points for clever ideas, role playing their PC and martial problem solving. This advancement or "leveling up" will mark their progress through the class as well as their understanding of the novel and time period.

So if ye be ready, let’s start this journey together . . ."

Don't Just Read it...Live it!

To encounter Treasure Island for the first time is a great and uncomplicated pleasure for a reader of any age. To be able to participate as a Player Character IN THE ADVENTURE is EPIC. One of the classic adventure stories in English, published first in 1881, Stevenson's novel transcends its time and genre and remains today not only a page-turner but also an engaging portrayal of personality and conflict. Treasure Island, once described as a "boys' book," appeals now not to boys alone but to anyone who likes exciting, believable, non-stop action and colorful characters in an exotic setting.

Set in the mid 1700s, first along the coast of western England and then in the seaport of Bristol, the book takes readers quickly to the high seas and finally to a remote and secret island on a quest for pirate treasure. And although this premise may sound far-fetched, in reality it is anything but that, as a brief look at history shows. Playing a character within the premise of the novel using the "world's greatest role playing game" (D&D 5E) will stretch the imagination and deepen the understanding tremendously.

Due to the nature of the Three Pillars of Adventure inherent in all role playing games (RPGs) where we do not wish to hurry our exploration, role playing, or combat - I have only provided rough dates after the first two sessions. Sometimes adventures wish to fully explore the potential of the setting, this is encouraged. One cannot rush imagination!

6 March "Session Zero" - character creation, Roll20 Orientation, and general discussion.
- Session One - The Admiral Benbow Inn
- Session Two - The Old Buccaneer
- Session Three - The Sea Cook
- Session Four - The Voyage
- Session Five - The Shore Adventure
- Session Six - The Stockade
- Session Seven - The Attack
- Session Eight - The Sea Adventure
- Session Nine - Captain Silver
- Session Ten - The Treasure Hunt
- Session Eleven - And Last
- Subsequent Sessions - Many, Many, Pirate Adventures (Caribbean, Mediterranean, etc.) ALL historically based yet with the fun and excitement of D&D.

The students will work within the novel as Player Characters (PCs); while they will not BE Long John Silver, they will most certainly interact with him throughout the class. Students should be familiar with TREASURE ISLAND either having read the book prior to the class or willing to read the chapter in advance of the class. This will enhance the student's role playing ability and enjoyment of the class.

Since this is a class based upon literature and history, all PCs will be humans yet may be any official D&D 5E class upon approval of the Dungeon Master (DM) during "Session Zero". Initially, this is a low magic campaign since this is also the time period of the WITCH CRAZE in England, thus too many cantrips might get you in trouble!

ALL students must have a Roll20 (free) account in order to participate in the class. Please do not pre-roll your character - we will do that together on Zoom (this is an important 'bonding' experience).

This class is based upon a novel about pirates, while certain aspects of the novel will be redacted, it was a violent world in the early 18th century. There will be fantasy combat on land and aboard ship. While the students will visit taverns these will be present more as rough family restaurants rather than the scurvy dives they actually were.

Over the past 30 years I have taught I.G.C.S.E, A-Level, I.B., and A.P. History throughout the Atlantic region in both private and public school settings. During that time I have instructed students in a variety of rigorous exam subjects . I am a strong advocate of "immersion education" (historic setting RPG) in the Social Studies classroom. My passion is Military History, which I have been enthusiastically studying my entire life. My present RPG classes involve a number of embedded lessons learned (empathy, teamwork, problem solving, decision-making, etc.) through the Three Pillars of Adventure: Exploration, Role-playing, and Fantasy Combat. My Battles & Generals classes are akin to an "On-Going, interactive discussion-based documentary" as one student put it not too long ago....and that seems about right.
