In addition to inviting students to identify some "take aways" at the end of each session. Students will also have the opportunity to fill out the high school planner, including a self reflection sheet. If students wish to receive concrete feedback on their planner, please submit a copy of the completed planner and self reflection within two weeks our last class session

This camp is designed to ease the transition to high school for teens with ADHD, executive function challenges, or other learning differences.  It can also serve as a review of effective executive function strategies for returning high school students.  Students will discuss topics such as the importance of organization, planning and self advocacy.  They will strategize how to form positive peer relationships, create an optimal learning environment, improve study skills and focus on school successes with an eye towards the future.  Students will be encouraged to take notes on a structured graphic organizer as they complete the class and to participate in note taking and brainstorming activities.  Each day will introduce and discuss different components of executive function and school success.

Peer Relationships, Transitions, and Self Advocacy
 Learners will practice a mind mapping technique and brainstorming to consider ways to make friends in high school.  Learners will also reflect upon their strengths, challenges, and needs to determine their optimal learning environment.

Planning, Prioritizing, and Organization
 Learners will brainstorm and record planning and organizational strategies to help them achieve a positive high school experience.  Learners will create a self advocacy letter or plan a functional at home learning space.

Note Taking and Writing Strategies
 Learners will discuss the importance of note-taking and will practice taking Cornell Notes.  They will research and create a KWL about a topic they are passionate about.

학습 요구
This class prepares neurodivergent teens including autistic learners as well as those with ADHD and anxiety for high school transition. Templates are shared in PDF and Google Doc form to support learners with dyslexia and dysgraphia.

ADHD Medication and Individual Education Plans may come up in the course of our discussion and developing planning guides. My approach will be that ADHD medication and IEP support can be helpful for some learners with ADHD but everyone has to find what works for their family in conjunction with medical and educational professionals. Students are also invited to share high school experiences in class.

Please print out materials provided before the each session.  I will try to provide a Google Doc template as an alternative when possible. A pen or pencil, some paper plain or lined, and some colored pencils or pen would also be good to have handy!

Bridget Smith is a teacher and parent with ADHD.  Her focus on Outschool is supporting students with ADHD, other neurodiverse learners, and  students with learning differences.  She has taught over 5000 learners, including teens, with ADHD and executive function challenges here on Outschool.  She is a credentialed teacher who has taught preschoolers through adult learners.  Bridget is credentialed by the State of California to teach K-12 Students.
