From the air we breathe to the food we eat, science is all around us. We will meet two times a week for 12 weeks. The kids will learn about different life science concepts which include ecosystems, food chains and food webs, the interaction of living things (plants and animals), and Earth science concepts such as Earth's water system. Since I live near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, we will learn about different plants, animals, and weather in this national park in some of...
24 lessons//12 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Plant SurvivalThis lesson focuses on plant needs and structures.Lesson 2Plants and SoilThis science experiment will test different soils and how they affect plant growth.Week 2Lesson 3Interaction of Living ThingsThis lesson focuses on how plants, animals, and humans interact.Lesson 4Predators and PreyThis lesson focuses on predators and prey relationships: foxes and rabbits in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.Week 3Lesson 5DecomposersThis lesson focuses on decomposers in an ecosystem.Lesson 6Decomposers science experimentThis science experiment will test the affect of a decomposer on a banana.Week 4Lesson 7Energy Transfer in EcosystemsThis lesson focuses on how energy is transferred in ecosystems.Lesson 8Food Chains and Food WebsIn class we will create different food chains and food webs for different ecosystems including animals and plants in the GSMNP.Week 5Lesson 9Cycles of MatterThis lesson focuses on how matter cycles in ecosystems.Lesson 10Cycles of MatterThis lesson continues the study of how matter cycles in ecosystems.Week 6Lesson 11Earth's Major SystemsThis lesson focuses on Earth's major systems.Lesson 12Earth's Major SystemsThis lesson continues the study of Earth's major systems.Week 7Lesson 13Earth’s Water SystemThis lesson focuses on Earth's water sources.Lesson 14Usable WaterThis lesson focuses on usable water on planet Earth.Week 8Lesson 15Human Impact on Water ResourcesThis lesson focuses on how humans impact Earth's water resources.Lesson 16Acid RainThis science experiment looks at how acid rain affects different objects.Week 9Lesson 17Effects of the HydrosphereThis lesson focuses on how the hydrosphere affects planet Earth.Lesson 18Science Activity :River ErosionThis science activity illustrates river erosion.Week 10Lesson 19Effects of the GeosphereThis lesson focuses on the geosphere and its effects on planet Earth.Lesson 20Effects of the Geosphere activityThis science activity will demonstrate one of the effects of the geosphere.Week 11Lesson 21Effects of the AtmosphereThis lesson focuses on how the atmosphere affects planet Earth.Lesson 22Earth's WeatherThis lesson focuses on what is weather and the different types on planet Earth.Week 12Lesson 23Effects of the BiosphereThis lesson focuses on the biosphere and how it affects planet Earth.Lesson 24Science Activity Desert OasisThe learners will create a desert oasis in class.
- The kids will learn about ecosystems and Earth's other systems in this class and use critical thinking skills.
- NGSS: 5-LS1-1 Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.
- 5-LS2-1 Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
- 5-PS3-1. Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, and motion and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun
- 5-ESS2-1. Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
- 5-ESS2-2. Describe and graph the amounts of salt water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.
- 5-ESS3-1. Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.
Hi, I'm Miss Robyn, and I have taught kids of all ages as a public school teacher, private instructor with my local homeschool organization, and as a 4-H leader. I enjoy sharing my interests with kids which include: science, cooking & baking, gardening, reading, hiking and enjoying nature.
