수업 소개
Each week, students will explore a different area of chemistry through easy, fun and engaging experiments. Through guided inquiry and observation students will gain an understanding of chemistry content using common household materials. A question, discrepant event or scenario will provided for students to learn to develop hypotheses, make observations, make a claim, and explain their reasoning behind their claim. Students will learn about dependent and independent variables as well as constants and control as they learn how safely design and perform scientific experiments at home. Students do not need to have any prior knowledge of chemistry. Everything will be explained during the lesson. Each lesson is a stand-alone lesson and do not build on each other. Therefore, students can pick which lessons they want to attend. Each week, students will explore a different area of chemistry through easy, fun and engaging experiments. A supply list and corresponding worksheets are provided as an attachment when you enroll in the class. Lessons: Week 1 - January 26, 2022 - May the Force Be With You (Electrostatics) Week 2 - February 9, 2022 -Making a Density Column Week 3 - February 16, 2022 -Non-Newtonian Liquids (Oobleck) Week 4 - March 2, 2022 -Detecting Acids and Bases with Household Indicators Week 5 - March 9, 2022 -Elephant Toothpaste Week 6 -March 23, 2022 -Let's Make Ice Cream
학습 목표
Students will perform experiments that will help them understand the following concepts: electrostatics, density, fluids, acids and bases, chemical reactions, and phase changes.

학부모 가이드
Please be aware that students in this class will be experimenting with rubbing alcohol, lamp oil, hydrogen peroxide, and vinegar. Other household materials may include soap, acids or bases that the parents can choose to work with depending on their comfort level. Please make sure that you are comfortable having your child use these chemical and do not have an any allergies to them. One of the experiments involves making ice cream. If you child has a milk allergy, they can substitute a milk-free substance, such as almond milk or coconut milk.

I have been a private school middle and high school science teacher for over 30 years. During that time, I taught classes in chemistry, engineering, earth science, life science, chemistry, forensic science, biology, and health. I enjoy teaching through hands-on experimentation and I believe that students learn best when they are activity engaged in the learning process and when they connect new concept with prior experiences. I have both a bachelor's and a master's degree in chemistry, as well as a secondary chemistry education teaching certificate from the state of Ohio.
