Thankfulness, gratitude, noticing the wonder of the world--these are character traits that we all wish we had more of, traits that Suji Kwok Kim celebrates in her wonderful poem about thankfulness in the city. In this class we will discuss the unfamiliar vocabulary, vivid images and free verse of the poem. Then we will analyze the themes of race, unity, gratitude, and modern life. Students will conclude the class by composing their own free verse poem about things they notice and feel...
Students will understand free verse as a poetic form, be able to compose a poem in free verse, and discuss the themes of "Slant."
There will be a brief discuss of race as it relates to the poem. Ms. Kim is a Korean American and the title of the poem "Slant" is chosen to represent not only the slant of the light and her slant on life, but also the slant of her eyes.
