수업 소개

영어 수준 - 알 수 없음
미국 9학년 - 12학년 학년
How can a student learn about an entire century of world history in 12 weeks? The 20th century began with the advent of automobiles and airplanes on the cusp of our first World War while imperial nations were still colonizing the far corners of the globe. And it ended after 2 global conflicts, 5 genocides, proxy wars, the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, spread of Communism, decolonization, space exploration, technological advancements into computer sciences, and the rapid succession of multiple forms of media.
WHAT A CENTURY!

Students will chronologically explore how the corners of the world changed along with the power shifts that came over 100 years, and how citizens globally were ravaged by the brutality while awed by the magnitude of all that the 20th century experienced. All lessons are taught to acknowledge multiple perspectives that exist in social, political and historical issues.

Students will read material in advance of class, participate in discussions, learn via slide shows, lectures, videos, primary source documents, and eyewitness accounts, complete in class and out of class writing assignments, and utilize the DBQ Essay writing format to synthesize the material covered in class. In addition students will complete two current event assignments and a culminating project independently. The culminating assignment will be presented by students during the final week of class.

Learning about history is important, otherwise we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. In order to learn, students need to ask questions, discuss the material and engage in a dialogue about the lessons we can learn from our past.

**********PLEASE READ*************
Outschool has recently changed its policy regarding class cancellations. We know how disappointing canceled classes can be for learners, so we too are amending our policy. In the past we have waited for late enrollees, of which we have had MANY! Unfortunately we can no longer do that.

Instead we will evaluate class enrollment for ongoing classes on teach Sunday at 5pm Eastern. IF enrollment falls below 3 students, we will push the class back a week and offer students a refund for the missed class. When other sections are available students will have the option to transfer to another class.

For one time, camp and multi day classes we will postpone the start of the class if enrollment falls below 3 learners 48 hours before the class is scheduled to begin. Full refunds will be provided for learners who cannot attend the newly scheduled class time.

Thank you for understanding, and for your loyalty.

20th Century World History includes 5 genocides and 2 world wars. Rape, murder, torture, sterilization, the use of nuclear and biological/chemical weapons, and more are integral to the conversation. There is not a way to effectively teach this class and avoid the atrocities that occurred. Sensitive students should not enroll in this class.

The teacher is currently awaiting approval from a fellow teacher to use her book, I Heart World History. If that approval is not granted, the teaching resource will be a text from Cengage Learning titled: Twentieth Century World, 7th Edition. The preferred resource is I Heart World History because it will not require textbook expense for learner families, but the Cengage book can be purchased used or rented for the duration of class at a cost under $30.

My education and licensure include history, for which I have taken countless classes about 20th century history, politics, genocides, etc. When facing sensitive and high-risk topics like genocide and rape, the material is presented in an historical context that humanizes the victims while examining how and why such acts were possible, and what lessons are to be learned from them.

In addition to teaching the Holocaust, the educator has 8 years of experience teaching a unit about 20th century genocides in Armenia, Cambodia, Rwanda, Serbia and Iraq. The educator has also taken higher education classes in Russian history, African history and geography of colonialism, and 20th century world history, specifically in reference to North and Central America.
