주당 1-2시간. Students will be asked to complete reading outside of class time. During our classes, students will work through writing activities. The purpose of this is to challenge students to develop their writing ability and to continue to understand how to develop their writing and arguments on their own through multiple rounds of feedback and editing, both as a group and 1-1 with the teacher. If writing assignments are not finished in class, students will be asked to finish them as part of their homework.
학습 평가
Students will be given several formal writing assignments throughout the semester. While these are not tests, per se, they can be used as assessment pieces for homeschooling evidence, which many states and countries require. All formal writing in my class will be completed with multiple rounds of written and verbal feedback. Students will have the opportunity to work through their writing skills as a group and 1-1 with me in class!

Grading - Students will have the opportunity to receive a grade in the form of their choosing.I am happy to provide a grade in the form of a percentage, letter, or both. I can also offer a formal letter for submission to state programs. I ask students throughout the semester about their needs for grading and am happy to work with parents to create a plan that meets their needs! Please note that Grading is NOT required.

수업 소개

영어 수준 - 알 수 없음
미국 8학년 - 10학년 학년
In this semester-long course, students will participate in reading, writing, and discussion activities through a science fiction and dystopian society course study! The goal of the course is to spend time examining the relationship between science fiction and dystopian elements and how they often lend a direct hand to one another. Throughout the class, students will participate in discussions and debates while practicing different writing styles - argumentative, analytical, and more.

To Kill a Mockingbird: "One of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable coming-of-age tale in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father - a crusading local lawyer - risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime". - Citation Provided at the Bottom of the Description!

Follow Scout as she experiences first-hand the prejudices of her hometown as she learns to do what is right when things get difficult. Through the course, students will have the chance to explore the history surrounding racism after the Civil War but before the Civil Rights Movement Era. Through Socratic Discussions, students will challenge themselves by discussing reading comprehension, literary analysis, and history while pairing the course with an opportunity to learn about themes, symbols, character development, and other literary elements that make this story so incredibly powerful. An essay and writing prompts will be provided throughout the classes to get your students thinking more critically about the novel and to challenge their thoughts and opinions of the events that occur in the novel to help them gain a better understanding of the story itself and the significance it has played in American culture.

Fahrenheit 451:
"Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden.

"Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television 'family'. But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn't live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television". - Citation is provided below!

Throughout the class, we will examine the novel and its importance to our past, present, and future. Bradbury's dystopian society has shocking similarities to history and culture and by using an analytical lens to view it, students will have the opportunity to learn why this enduring novel continues to be a classic piece of literature read by students all over the world each year.

In our class, we will be discussing topics of the novels, many of which can be difficult, uncomfortable, controversial, and more. Below are a list of topics that are not only in the novel but that we will discuss in class. I encourage students to talk with me in class, to talk with their parents before reading, and to discuss these topics with one another in polite, respectful conversations. I have also provided a link to the parental guides from Common Sense Media for both the book and the movie (in case students and parents choose to watch it together outside of class time). Banned Book Topics Include: - Violence, Suicide, Drugs and Alcohol, Crimes, Politics, Religion, and Racism Guide for To Kill a Mockingbird: CommonSenseMedia (Book Review): To Kill a Mockingbird! - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/to-kill-a-mockingbird CommonSenseMedia (Movie Review): - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/to-kill-a-mockingbird Guide for Fahrenheit 451: CommonSenseMedia (Book Review): Fahrenheit 451 - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/fahrenheit-451 CommonSenseMedia (Movie Review): - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/fahrenheit-451 Parents should research the books prior to enrollment to determine if the books are appropriate for their student(s).
