수업 소개
**Students may join at any time! This class offers review days often so students won't miss any material no matter when they join or if they need to pause and take a break. Language arts is comprised of many elements. This class will cover the following: Reading comprehension --> We will cover different authors and book excerpts for reading comprehension. (This is my favorite part of class and I've chosen authors specifically to blend contemporary authors students have already heard of with more classic literature authors as well.) My hope is that this much introduction into different authors, their lives, the books they wrote, and different genres might encourage a love for reading and a nice summer reading list curated by the end of class :) Writing --> First, we will cover the necessary writing skills. Secondly, we will practice using these skills and students will be showcasing them all towards the very end! (My degree in creative writing comes in handy here. I take this part of class very seriously. It does not matter what your student's future goals are, writing is a much-needed life skill!) Students will write short creative fiction, formal persuasive essays, and learn how to format their writing in both MLA and APA formats. Grammar --> Students will be learning new grammar terms, why we need to know them, and how to use them properly when we write. Spelling and vocabulary --> Each week students will be introduced to new vocabulary words, commonly confused words, and spelling words. JANUARY Week of January 7 - Intro to class - Listening to an audible version of The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe and also a clip from a Spongebob episode where they recreated the Tell-Tale Heart with "Squeaky Boots." This is a fun but great way to start understanding and seeing literature all around us. By the end of class, you'll start noticing things everywhere! It will be like playing iSpy real-world edition! Week of January 14 - Learning how we learn - The creation of new neural pathways. Basic grammar review + 5 vocabulary words (Noun, proper noun, pronouns, reflexive pronouns, irregular plural nouns, concrete + abstract nouns.) Week of January 21 - Author study - Ernest Hemingway - Reading excerpt from, "The Old Man and the Sea" - Audible sent as homework + Fun fact of the week! + Watching a clip from the famous Robin Williams in his movie, Dead Poet's Society. In this motivational clip, he talks about how we should view and read literature and it's such a great message, I had to share it with each class! Week of January 28 - Review Blooket game day. Basic grammar review + 5 vocabulary words (Verb, adverbs, linking verbs, homophones + homographs), prepositional phrases. In class, we use engaging YouTube videos, interactive games on Blooket.com, and resources from several websites.
수업 자료
Everything is supplied in class via screenshare. I suggest students use a program like Googledocs to save all their writing samples. One file labeled HS-English would be fine. Students will be asked to play flashcard review games on Blooket in class... they do not need their own account, they can use mine!
