Come journey back in time to the world of the Ancients! This is part 1 of a 2 part hands-on history series covering ancient civilizations from around the world. In this flipped classroom, students will participate in activities, discussions, and projects in class and read, watch video clips and lectures, and view presentations on their own during the rest of the week. Students should expect 1 or 2 hours of outside work a week, although students who want to do more will receive plenty of optional resources! We will start our journey in Mesopotamia with the Sumerians, and continue on to study Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, the Indus Valley, Ancient Africa, and more. Week 1: Students will be studying Ancient Mesopotamia. The in-class project is making Cuneiform with a salt flour dough. Students will also begin working on Canopic Jars toppers for Ancient Egypt. Week 2: Students will be studying Ancient Egypt. The in-class project is building a pyramid with sugar cubes (or alternative building blocks) and work on our Canopic Jars. Week 3: Students will be studying Ancient Egypt. The in-class project is an Ancient Egypt Escape Room and we will finish our Canopic jar experiment with mummified apples. Week 4: Students will be studying Ancient African Cultures: Nubia and Great Zimbabwe. The in-class project is carving soapstone birds, using soap. Week 5: Students will be studying The Indus Valley. The in-class project will be making a clay seal Week 6: Students will be studying Ancient China. The in-class project will be making paper Week 7: Students will be studying Ancient China. The in-class project will be an Ancient China Escape Room Week 8: Students will be studying Ancient Japan. The in-class project will be making a kite. Week 9: Students will be studying Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Persians. The in-class project will be making sailboats from recycled materials. Week 10: Review. In-class activity will be "The Ancients Game", a fun teacher-created review game. The second part of this series will cover Ancient Rome, Greece, and Ancient Cultures of the Americas, Australia, and more. All the projects should be able to be completed by students of average ability in the target age group independently, although depending on the level of details they want to put into the project they may need extra time after class is over. The class may occasionally go over the allotted time. If your child struggles with dexterity, fine motor skills, or has other learning challenges, or they are younger, they may need parental help (off-camera) Feel free to reach out to the instructor to discuss!

The teacher will provide the curriculum for out of class learning. Access to a printer is required. Materials needed for the in-class activity week-by-week are below: Week 1: Cuneiform and Canopic Jar Topper Students will need: 2 cups plain flour 1 cup of salt 1 tbs oil 1 cup of cold water or clay, model magic, or playdough. lollipop stick, coffee stirrer, or popsicle stick Lid from Jar to be used in Week 2's project Week 2: Pyramid and Canopic Jar Students will need: One box of sugar cubes or alternative small building block Clean jar with a lid such as a pickle jar or pint-size canning jar Acrylic paints and brush Glue Week 3: Apple Salt Baking soda Week 4: Bar of plain soap Scissors or butter knife Week 5: Model Magic or other air-drying clay Glossy White paint or Modge Podge Paint-brush Wooden skewer chopstick or dowel Twine Week 6: Paper Mesh screening or cheesecloth (screening is available at most hardware stores, cheesecloth at most grocery stores) 4 wood pieces to build a frame or wooden picture frame Dish bin or similarly sized plastic bin Bowl & water Glue Duct tape Week 7: No additional materials needed Week 8: A1 card stock Ruler Pencil 5 20-inch dowelling sticks 2 28-inch doweling sticks Masking tape Scissors Glue Thread Paints & brush String Bamboo or other stick Week 9: Materials will vary, as students will be encouraged to reuse and repurpose household materials Recycled cups, cardboard, plastic containers, plastic bags, and paper Left-over pieces and materials from our other projects Paints, Brush and Modge Podge (optional) Duct Tape Glue Week 10: No additional materials needed

By profession, I am an Ecology Instructor at a local College Environmental Education Center. I have 15 years of experience teaching Math, Science, and History, and multi-disciplinary classes at the elementary, middle, and high school level. I am also a homeschool mom of 3 and co-op director. I love teaching through hands-on activities including experiments, games, and real-world adventures. Science and math classes are my current specialties, but I also love to teach adulting skills, and fun game-based or craft-based multidisciplinary classes.
I am a Google Certified Educator and a certified Vex Robotics Instructor and I have been designing escape rooms for decades!
