Throughout the 8-week course, students will delve into Greek mythology and the gods through assigned readings from D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. Prior to each class, students will read about 25 pages and answer assigned questions. During class, there will be a group discussion to review the readings and answer questions together. Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to Greek MythologyIn this introductory class, we explore the genesis of Greek mythology, from the primordial beings like Gaea and Uranus to the rise of Zeus and the Titans.Week 2Lesson 2Gods and Goddesses of OlympusFocusing on the deities of Mount Olympus, we delve into the complex stories and roles of Hera, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Ares, Athena, and Poseidon, alongside their associated myths.Week 3Lesson 3Exploring Divine DomainsThis week, we examine the realms and narratives of Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Hades, Persephone, and Demeter, uncovering their significance and stories within Greek mythology.Week 4Lesson 4Beyond the OlympiansVenturing into lesser-known divine entities, including Dionysus and minor gods, as well as mythological figures like Prometheus, Pandora, and Deucalion, we expand our understanding of the mythological world.Week 5Lesson 5Celestial and Earthly BeingsFrom celestial beings like Helios and Selene to earthly figures such as Pan and Echo, we explore a diverse array of characters, including Asclepius and the Nine Muses, and their tales.Week 6Lesson 6Mortals and HeroesDelving into the adventures and trials of mortal heroes, including Perseus, Theseus, and Oedipus, we unravel their connections to gods and their legendary quests.Week 7Lesson 7Trials and TriumphsThis week delves into the challenges faced by legendary figures such as Sisyphus, Bellerophon, Heracles, and Theseus, illuminating their heroic deeds and tragic flaws.Week 8Lesson 8Epics and SagasConcluding our journey through Greek mythology, we explore epic quests such as the Golden Fleece, the Calydonian Boar Hunt, the tale of the Apple of Discord, and the legendary Trojan War.

As someone who has studied Greek Mythology in college, I find it captivating and enjoyable to incorporate into my teaching. The myths not only entertain but also provide valuable lessons, making the learning experience informative and engaging for students. By sharing the extraordinary tales of Greek mythology, I aim to make my classes both educational and entertaining. Although I do not consider myself an expert, I have spent over three years studying the ancient sources and have developed a strong understanding of Greek mythology.

It should be noted that Greek mythology often depicts violent themes such as wars and tragedies. It is important to keep in mind that such content is present throughout the mythology. During class, we may use video clips from YouTube to supplement our learning, but rest assured, they will be appropriate for all ages.
