Does your child have a love of collecting things? If so, you're in the right place! Research has shown that one of the keys to reading comprehension success is vocabulary. This class provides a live, interactive space for children to practice using vocabulary and developing skills that give them an increased understanding of unknown words. According to the British Council: "More than 150,000 words of English are derived from Greek words" and Dictionary.com reminds us that "About 80 percent of the entries in any English dictionary are borrowed, mainly from Latin." If your child is interested in a career involving science or technology, that percentage of vocabulary words raises to 90 percent. While mastering vocabulary skills is hard work, it can still be fun! This class will have your child collecting Greek and Latin roots and affixes for vocabulary just as they would collect stamps, toys, animals, books, or Pokemon! And as we learn new words, prefixes, and suffixes, we will learn about the "stats," or morphology of those words. Your child will be able to use morphology to identify prefixes and suffixes just as easily as they could identify a Pokemon's elemental type. The course schedule is structured as follows. Week 1: Welcome, Why Greek and Latin Roots, and How to Use Course Materials Week 2: History of Ancient Rome and the Latin Alphabet Week 3: History of Ancient Greece and the Greek Alphabet Week 4: Function of Roots in a Word: Base, Prefix, or Suffix? (Mid-Course Cummulative Check) Week 5: Continuing to Build Words from Roots: Growing the "Pokedex" Week 6: Using Etymologies to Understand the "Stats" of Your Words Week 7: A Few More Words to Collect Week 8: Course Wrap-Up and Celebration New vocabulary will be introduced every week. --To assess student comprehension of root use, I will be utilizing the Kahoot app weekly. Students must have access to a second device for Kahoot. I will be using screen share for the Kahoot questions.
--Dictionary.com will be screen shared to demonstrate the application of etymologies in the English language. Some students may be asked to look up definitions on Dictionary.com in class or for homework.
