수업 소개

영어레벨 - A2
미국 8학년 - 11학년 학년
In this book club we will read and discuss _Great Expectations_ by Charles Dickens. Learners will be required to read ahead according to the schedule below and look for concepts that resonate with them so that they will be prepared for discussion. Some possible topics may include author/historical context, character development, themes, quotes, relatable events, or political/religious undertones. After a five minute check-in period, I will begin each session with a short read-aloud to set the tone for the day. Learners will then be given opportunity to pose questions, offer comments, and share connections they have made with the story. I will also have open-ended questions prepared to keep conversation moving and relevant. During the last two sessions learners will share a completed project demonstrating what they have gained from the story. Projects may be essays, artwork, crafts, music, short stories, drama, etc. Time allowed for project sharing will depend on the number of learners in the club. Learners should complete this club understanding what makes the story compelling over 100 years after it was written.

Week 1: Chapters 1-7
Week 2: Chapters 8-15
Week 3: Chapters 16-22
Week 4: Chapters 23-30
Week 5: Chapters 31-37
Week 6: Chapters 38-44
Week 7: Chapters 45-52
Week 8: Chapters 53-59

During each session learners will be allowed to perform relevant creative activities or fidget/stim as needed in order to engage with the material and with others. Learners who are uncomfortable speaking on camera will have the option to use the chat function.

I do not assign letter or number grades to engagement in this club. If parents need to assign a grade for a transcript I will be happy to provide information on topics covered and learner participation at the end of the club.

Examples of discussion starters:
*How did Miss Havisham and Estella change Pip's view of himself? Why did they have such an effect on him if he was so unimpressed by them?
*Among what sort of people did Pip find himself upon reaching London? Is public opinion a reliable gauge of character? Why or why not? What clues are we given to characters of Pip's new friends?
*Why was Pip so horrified by the true source of his money? Discuss his attitude toward his benefactor.
*What are Pip's realistic expectations? How does he feel about them? Are they good or bad?

교사 전문성 및 자격증
I have been an avid reader of classics since elementary school, received a bachelor's degree in Secondary English Education, and have been working with children (homeschool, co-ops, private capacity) for almost 30 years. Dickens is one of my favorite authors, and I have read Great Expectations many times.
