This class focuses on developing phonemic awareness, a crucial skill for learning to read in alphabetic writing systems like English, where letters represent phonemes or sounds. Phonemic awareness is a prerequisite for phonics, the next step in reading, as it helps learners connect sounds with their corresponding written symbols and blend them to form words. Despite having 26 letters, the English language comprises approximately 40 phonemes, with around 250 different spellings for these sounds (e.g., /f/ represented as ph, f, gh, ff). Through this class, students will train their ears to recognize these distinct phonemes and their tongues to articulate them accurately. Each week, students will participate in engaging activities centered around themes that promote key phonemic awareness skills, including syllable counting, word segmentation, rhyming, and alliteration.
