Students will begin class with a fun, short game, such as the numeric problem solving game 24. In 24, each card has four numbers, and students must use each of the four numbers in any order with any operation to get to the number 24.

Once our math brains are warmed up, we will play that day's game! We will have a rotating schedule of games:

Last week of August: SET, a visual logic game

First week of September: Bowl-A-Fact--get out your dice, and get ready to roll a strike! In this game, students will roll a die three times to get their numbers. They will then use those numbers to "strike" down their bowling pins, 1-10. This game may be played in break-out rooms.

Second week of September: Digit-Place, a clue-based, logical problem game. This game is so popular, I made it its own club, due to students requests!

Third week of September: Dice Games--get out your bucket of dice for this one! In this game, students will roll ten dice, then group dice into groups that equal ten. They will roll again with remianing dice until all dice are grouped. This game leads to fun discussion about if we want to modify the rules or how we get points.

Fourth week of September: Closest to 100--This game may be played in break out rooms. Students will use a hundreds grid (which I will post on the classroom page), something to color with, and dice. Students will use two dice to roll the coordinates of a grid. They will then color that rectangle or square on their hundreds grid. Students will take turns in pairs. The goal is to be able to most closely fill your board without losing turns.

I will gauge student interest in games—we may repeat some, or we may begin all new in October. I will update the schedule here.
학습 목표
In all classes: Students will always have the opportunity to engage in communicating about ideas and problem solving methods with other students.

When playing 24: Students will improve the speed and accuracy of their computational skills.

Students will think flexibly and divergently to consider all possible combinations of number and operation to arrive at 24.

Students will communicate their reasoning clearly for their own solutions or if they object to another player’s solution.

In our rotating games, students will:

Think flexibly and logically

Utilize and sharpen mental math and computation skills

In Dogit-Place:
Students will improve their focus, strategy, and assessment of information to improve their ability to find the number.

Students will embrace mathematical logic and have fun!

In SET:
Students will use visual problem solving to determine which three cards on the board make a set, using four categories: shape, color, number, and shading.

Students will learn to predict what is needed to complete a set given two of the three cards.

Students will formulate informal proofs (such as: I see these two parts of a set, therefore I must look for this part.)

수업 자료
Some games require dice. Some require paper and pencil. I will post what is needed for each particular class before class begins on the classroom page.

Math is fun! Don't believe me? Give this fun math games club a try! We will engage our brains, think mathematically, and have a great time as play our games. Your child will get to know theIr classmates as we share thinking, answers, and strategies.

I taught full-time for sixteen years, and math is one of my favorite subjects! I excel in teaching thinking, problem solving, and pattern finding, not just teaching isolated methods that may not mean much to students. I believe in providing for play, discussion, and materials you can hold and move in math. I have a Masters of Special Education of Academically and Intellectually Gifted Students, and taught in a magnet school for gifted students for eight years. This means I am an expert at challenging students, delving deep into topics, and helping those for whom math isn't their greatest strength.
