수업 소개

At Skillabration, we help students take their French from zéro to en feu 🔥! (Zero to FIRE!)

TEACHER Mademoiselle ARMOUR
Mademoiselle has been teaching since 1994 and working online since 2023.
Mademoiselle has a bachelor’s and a master's in French.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Some students come to us with materials from what they are learning in school and
other students come to us just wanting to start from scratch. We cater to the students'
needs.

We incorporate a mix of speaking, reading, listening, and writing so students can
practice using the language in a variety of ways. This helps increase overall fluency and
literacy.

As soon as students learn enough vocabulary and verbs, we start teaching sentences
and encourage conversation. Depending on the student's age we will use games and
props to engage students.

HOW LONG IS THE CLASS?
This class is a subscription that you can cancel at any time. When you sign up, we will
share our materials with you after the class, if we use Skillabration's materials.

You will get a class recording so your student can practice. Recordings are automatically
posted within 24 hours of the lesson so students can watch the lesson again. Re-watching the lesson typically helps with pronunciation and vocabulary or grammar practice.

Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

FAQ
WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE?
We have curriculum for ages 8-10 and middle/high school French I. Other levels of high
school French, including Advanced Placement, are available. Skillabration created its
own materials using PowerPoint Slides and Nearpod.

WHAT IS YOUR TEACHING STYLE?
We use a mix of traditional and comprehensive input. Traditionally, language teachers
start with the alphabet, numbers and a set of vocabulary based on a theme such as
food or family vocabulary. Then the students memorize what they learned. Along with
the vocabulary students also learn some grammar or phrases.

Comprehensive input is more like learning language the way a baby does. Babies hear their parents speak and
learn words based on context. When a parent points to something such as a toy or a
dog, the child learns the vocabulary in that context.

So how do we combine both traditional and comprehensive input? In our experience,
both teaching/learning styles have value. If a student jumps into comprehensive input
(immersion) too quickly, they will go into fight or flight mode, which can lead them to not
wanting to experience the language ever again. However, if the class only uses the
traditional style, students might not ever learn to speak or understand the language
when they hear it. We mix the two styles by gradually building up their vocabulary
traditionally and layering in immersion slowly over time through reading, writing,
speaking, and listening. We will start to use more phrases in French the longer the
student is in class with us.

WHAT DOES YOUR CURRICULUM LOOK LIKE?
Ages 8-10
Unit 1 – Alphabet, greetings, numbers 0-31
Unit 2 – Days of the week, months of the year, birthdays, seasons
Unit 3 – Clothing, colors, and body parts
Unit 4 – Family and the house

We incorporate phrases and sentences in each unit so students learn how to start
speaking. For example, in the clothing unit students learn how to ask and say: What are
you wearing today? I am wearing _______. If students stay enrolled long enough, we
will eventually read short stories where they will be exposed to more complex
sentences, verbs, and rich vocabulary.

Ages 11-18
Unité 1 – Alphabet, greetings, introductions, numbers, people
Unité 2 – Food and beverages, telling time, money, the calendar, weather
Unité 3 – Activities, the verb ÊTRE (to be), FAIRE (to do), regular -ER verbs, asking
questions
Unité 4 – Adjectives, describing people and objects, personal possessions, the verb
AVOIR (to have)
Unité 5 – Town, home and transportation, sports, games, and musical instruments; the
verbs ALLER (to go) and VENIR (to come), stress pronouns and possessive adjectives,
ordinal numbers
Unité 6 – Clothing and shopping; stem changing -ER verbs, regular -IR and -RE verbs,
the verb METTRE (to put), commands and comparatives
Unité 7 – Vacation activities, the passé compose (past tense) with AVOIR and ÊTRE
Unité 8 – Food, meals and the table; irregular verbs PRENDRE (to take), BOIRE (to
drink), CONNAÎTRE and SAVOIR (to know), LIRE (to read), DIRE (to say), ÉCRIRE (to
write), VOULOIR (to want), POUVOIR (to be able to), and DEVOIR (to have to), direct
and indirect object pronouns

This curriculum has 8 units, which can be taught for an entire year. Over time they will
learn how to conjugate in the present tense, say commands and learn the past tense.
The older students learn in a more traditional language learning environment.

Example of Class Schedule:
Week 1 - August 1 - Alphabet Lesson 1
Week 2 - August 8 - Alphabet Lesson 2
Week 3 - August 15 - French Greetings 1
Week 4 - August 22 - French Greetings 2

SHOULD I CHOOSE THE 25- OR 45-MINUTE CLASS?
If you have an 8–10-year-old, we highly recommend the 25-minute class. We also
prefer 25-minute classes for ages 11-18, but the 45-minute lesson will allow us to practice
more with all four language domains: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

DO YOU OFFER LESSONS 2 OR MORE TIMES A WEEK?
Yes! We can get you scheduled for more than one class a week. Just send us a
message and we can coordinate times.

HOW DO I GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU?
Send us a message on Outschool by clicking the "Ask a question" or "Request another
time" button. Be sure to check your messages on Outschool because sometimes the
Outschool e-mail notifications go to junk mail. If you click the profile picture at the top of
this page it should toggle down to the Teacher section where you can find the: "Ask a
question" button.

....................................................................................................................................................................................................

At Skillabration we help students take their foreign language skills from zero to FUEGO (fire) by mixing traditional and immersive teaching theories. This means we appreciate note-taking, but also challenge students with speaking, listening, and literacy in Spanish. We layer in more and more immersion as students build their vocabulary. This allows students to gradually acclimate to the language and enjoy the process.

What should you know about language learning?
- Language learning takes time, most people become fluent when they're immersed in the language or they've studied the language for many years. Even with immersion, it can take several years to become native-like
- Traditional language learning includes learning vocabulary and grammar in a specific order, typically starting with the alphabet and basic terms to eventually learning more advanced grammar and vocabulary.
- Immersive or comprehensive input is when students learn through natural exposure, not necessarily starting with the alphabet. For beginners, this can look like reading a story that has photos and basic phrases or learning the alphabet with vocabulary instead of just learning letters.

What do our classes look like?
Classes for 8-10 year olds:
- Lesson one starts with the alphabet. We teach the alphabet with a song and we have an alphabet lesson 3 times before we move on.
- Next we move into vocabulary. I use photos, labels and simple phrases to teach vocabulary. First we practice pronunciation 2 to 3 times, then we practice recognition of the vocabulary, finally we practice recalling the vocabulary.
Example of Recognition: Circle the cat. Circle the dog. Circle the cow.
Example of Recalling: How do you say cat in Spanish? How do you say dog?
- We give instructions in Spanish, but in the beginning we tell students what the phrase means. We might remind them a few times what it means, but after a few times most students remember class instructions such as "Repitánme" (repeat me), "Dibuja un circulo alrededor de" (Draw a circle around), and "¿Cómo se dice ______?" (How do you say?)

Classes for 11-14 year olds:
- We start with a preliminary unit that includes an alphabet song, which we practice for two lessons. Then we learn numbers 0-10 and days of the week. We practice spelling numbers and days in Spanish to practice recognition of Spanish letters out of order. The preliminary unit also includes Spanish greetings and introductions, and weather.
- Students will take notes on the vocabulary and after taking notes on 3-6 words we practice the pronunciation. Then we do an activity to review the vocabulary. Activities can include matching pairs, drag and drop, fill in the blank or recalling the vocabulary with speaking. Other activities can include speaking and interacting by asking other students questions.
- Units include vocabulary lessons and grammar lessons. The units build on each other moving from more basic vocabulary and grammar to more complex.
- We give my instructions in Spanish, but in the beginning I tell students what the phrase means. We might remind them a few times what it means. They learn class instructions such as "Repitánme" (repeat me) and "¿Cómo se dice ______?" (How do you say?)
