Welcome to the Fine Art Photography Club for Beginners, a weekly club designed for curious minds ages 8–13 who want to explore photography beyond just taking snapshots. Whether your child uses a phone camera or a digital camera, this class nurtures artistic thinking, creative exploration, and visual storytelling in a fun and supportive group.
Taught by a professional photographer with a science background, a degree in photography, and a passion for helping kids connect deeply with art and the world around them, this class is more than a how-to, it's a doorway into seeing like an artist.

What Will Be Taught?
Students will learn the fundamentals of photography through the lens of fine art. That means we won't just talk about how to take technically correct photos, we’ll dig into why an image is powerful, beautiful, or thought-provoking. Topics will rotate weekly and include:
Elements of Composition (rule of thirds, framing, depth)
Light and Shadow (natural light, contrast, dramatic lighting)
Texture, Pattern, and Shape in Photography
Movement and Stillness (how to capture action or peaceful moments)
Color Theory and Emotion
Black and White Photography
Photojournalism vs. Fine Art
Portraits with Personality
Nature, Landscape, and Abstract Photography
Telling a Story Through a Series of Images

Since this is an ongoing class, students can join at any time! The topics rotate, and I always loop back to foundational principles throughout. Some weeks focus on technique (like focus or lighting), while others are more expressive (like "capture something that feels like summer").
We’ll also look at the work of influential photographers like Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, and contemporary artists, connecting their styles to student projects. (All examples will be age-appropriate and fully licensed or in the public domain.)

Teaching Style
My approach is warm, hands-on, and highly interactive. I believe children learn this subject best when they’re curious and engaged, so I encourage exploration and self-expression over perfection. With a background in both science and fine art, I blend technical know-how with a storytelling approach. This helps kids not just take better photos, but think like artists.
I also integrate light elements of art history, visual literacy, and even neuroscience to gently show how photography connects to bigger ideas about creativity and perception, all explained in age-appropriate language.

Student Interaction
Live Teaching – Weekly mini-lessons with interactive slides
Image Discussion – Students may bring 1–2 photos to share (optional but encouraged!)
Creative Games & Prompts – Occasionally, we’ll play mini photo scavenger hunts or visual storytelling games
Open Q&A – I make time in each class for student questions and sharing
Gentle Critiques – I model kind, constructive feedback and teach kids how to appreciate each other’s work
Students will never be put on the spot, and participation is encouraged but never forced. Shy learners are welcome to observe until they’re ready to engage.

What Will Learners Need?
A digital camera or smartphone/tablet with a working camera
A way to upload or show photos (they can show the screen of another device to the camera)
Enthusiasm and a willingness to try new things!

A Note for Parents
As a long-time educator, professional photographer, and homeschooling mom, I understand the balance between learning and joy. This class is designed to build artistic and critical thinking skills in a relaxed, welcoming space where students can express themselves through their images. I emphasize process over perfection and support every child wherever they are in their journey, whether they’re just learning how to hold a camera or already snapping away with excitement.

Hi! I’m Kayla, a professional photographer with a degree in photography and a strong foundation in the sciences. I’ve spent the last several years combining my love of art, education, and storytelling to help young learners see the world through a more creative lens. With over 15 years of homeschooling experience and a background in both art and real-world commercial photography, I guide students to not just take better photos, but to think like artists, notice details, and express themselves with confidence. My teaching is hands-on, engaging, and rooted in curiosity and exploration.
