Do you like learning about history? Do you love movies? Do you like learning about African American History? Well, this course combines all those things! In this six-week course we will explore the history of African American actors and movies in the film industry from 1910 – 2020. Every week a movie will be assigned for homework. The movies were produced in every decade from 1970 – 2010. This is an informational and interactive course that will expose students to African American actors...
Students will learn about the history of African Americans in the film industry. They will be exposed to movies from the 1970s - 2010s with black centered stories and/or characters. They will learn why representation is important in the film industry and will learn about black actors who paved the way for future actors.
I have been a substitute teacher for six years for pre-k to high school students in all subjects. I am an avid movie fan and love all things film related. I have been an actor and filmmaker for the past seven years and enjoy teaching young people about the movie industry.

Movie Ratings: Sounder (1972) (rated G) is the movie on the list that is the most stepped in racial injustice. It is set in the 1930s about a sharecropping family. There are a few curse words and there is a scene where a dog gets shot (but does not die). I suggest watching this movie (and all the movies) with your child. This is the heaviest movie assigned for homework. Polly (1989) (rated G) Cinderella (G) (1997) Cool Runnings (1993) (rated PG).
