Unit 1Negative Numbers and Absolute Value
6 lessons2 Weeks
Negative Numbers and Absolute Value
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Readiness Assessment
We will begin with a readiness assessment that covers basic skills and gives a preview of course material to allow for individualization including review materials, tutoring suggestions, and enrichment based on the results of each individual learner.
Lesson 2
What are positive and negative numbers?
We will extend our thinking to negative numbers by exploring real world contexts in which we use these numbers primarily temperature and sea level. We will then work to abstract this thinking to a vertical number line.
Lesson 3
How can we compare positive and negative numbers?
We will work with positive and negative numbers on a horizontal number line, formalize our understanding of rational numbers, and use inequalities to compare positive and negative numbers.
Lesson 4
How do we order positive and negative numbers?
We will solidify our understanding of rational numbers by ordering positive and negative numbers. We will understand the "opposite" of a number to be the number that is equally as far from zero.
Lesson 5
What is absolute value?
We will explore absolute value as the distance form zero, practice finding and comparing the absolute value of rational numbers, and understand the notation.
 Week 2
Lesson 6
How can we compare numbers and distance from zero?
We will apply our understanding of absolute value to real world examples and situations involving elevations and understand how to compare rational numbers and the absolute value of rational numbers using inequalities.
Unit 2Adding and Subtracting Negative Numbers
5 lessons2 Weeks
Adding and Subtracting Negative Numbers
 Week 2
Lesson 7
How can we represent change with negative numbers?
We will learn how to add negative numbers by connecting it to changing temperatures and representing the change on a number line.
Lesson 8
How can we represent change with negative numbers (part 2)?
We will build fluency adding with negative numbers beginning with elevation and moving towards more abstract work. We will understand additive inverses by adding opposite numbers.
Lesson 9
Where else do we add negative numbers?
We will apply our knowledge of adding negative numbers to situations involving money, debts, and checking accounts in order to expand our understanding and fluency while building financial literacy skills.
Lesson 10
What happens when you subtract negative numbers?
We will use our understanding of adding negative numbers and the relationship between adding and subtracting as inverse operations to develop strategies for subtracting negative numbers and prove our ideas using the number line.
 Week 3
Lesson 11
How can we solve problems by adding and subtracting negative numbers?
We will apply our understanding of negative numbers to a multitude of problems and understand the difference between two numbers can be positive or negative but the distance is always positive this will help us apply existing subtraction strategies to negative numbers. We will also work with tables to use these strategies in context of real world applications.
Unit 3The Coordinate Plane
3 lessons1 Week
The Coordinate Plane
 Week 3
Lesson 12
What is a coordinate plane?
We will use our knowledge of negative numbers and the number line to expand to understanding the coordinate plane beginning with identifying quadrants and plotting points in them. We will also construct appropriate coordinate planes to display specific points including choosing a scale.
Lesson 13
What do the points on a coordinate plane mean?
We will work on connecting meaning to the coordinate plane including financial contexts to interpret points on a plane and axis. We will use the coordinate plane to solve problems and represent complex situations.
Lesson 14
How can we find the distance on a coordinate plane?
We will find vertical and horizontal distances between pairs of points in the coordinate plane and draw shapes on the coordinate plane using this knowledge.
Unit 4Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers
4 lessons2 Weeks
Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers
 Week 3
Lesson 15
How do we multiply negative numbers?
We will use negative numbers to represent situations using position, speed, and direction. We will practice multiplying two negative numbers and construct models and explanations for why we get a positive result.
 Week 4
Lesson 16
How do we multiply positive and negative numbers?
We will expand our understanding of multiplying negative numbers and look for patterns to understand what happens when we multiply negative and positive numbers. We will use these skills to solve problems and review multiplying by reciprocals to prepare for division.
Lesson 17
How can we divide with negative numbers?
We will expand our work with signed numbers to all four operations by working with division. We will develop rules for dividing signed numbers based on the relationship between multiplication and division and our previous work with proportional relationships.
Lesson 18
Can a rate be negative?
We will explore negative rates of change which will be an important foundation for linear functions in pre-algebra. We will apply our understanding of signed numbers to real world historical contexts involving travel.
Unit 5Equations with Rational Numbers
3 lessons2 Weeks
Equations with Rational Numbers
 Week 4
Lesson 19
How can we represent problems with expressions using negative numbers?
In this lesson we will highlight expressions and variables in our work with negative numbers and challenge common misconceptions as we develop our signed number sense through evaluation expressions involving negative numbers.
Lesson 20
How can we solve equations with rational numbers?
We will expand our knowledge of using inverse operations to solve equations and apply it to negative numbers.
 Week 5
Lesson 21
How can we represent contexts with equations using negative numbers?
We will practice constructing equations which represent contexts and write our own equations using negative numbers to represent given contacts. We will also practice using the structure of an equation to determine if the solution is a positive or negative number.
Unit 6Putting It To Work
4 lessons1 Week
Putting It To Work
 Week 5
Lesson 22
How can we make art using the coordinate plane?
We will do some directed drawing using the coordinate plane and then we will create individual art work using the coordinate plane.
Lesson 23
How can we understand the stock market using negative numbers?
We will apply our knowledge in a culminating project allowing us to understand the stock market using what we've learned so far.
Lesson 24
Bonus Day
This unit includes a bonus day that can be moved throughout the lesson to provide additional support on any challenging topic, pre-test review, or enrichment if no review or support is needed.
Lesson 25
What have we learned?
We will close the unit with an assessment to confirm mastery and inform future instruction.
