Class Experience
Understanding data is a superpower for the future. In this flex course, students will receive weekly detailed videos and examples (on average, around 1 hour of video per week) and practice fun and interesting data sets that go through various topics in Microsoft Excel, which can proceed at the learners own pace. Week 1Lesson 1Excel BasicsIntroduction to the course and Excel basics. Includes familiarization with Excel interface and basic functions. Covers setting up simple spreadsheets and inputting data.Week 2Lesson 2Formatting DataFormatting data in Excel. Covers cell formatting, conditional formatting, and working with basic charts and graphs. Focuses on enhancing visual data representation.Week 3Lesson 3Intermediate FunctionsIntermediate Excel functions. Introduces functions like SUM, AVERAGE, and other common Excel formulas. Focuses on creating more complex spreadsheets with calculated data.Week 4Lesson 4Advanced TopicsAdvanced Excel topics. Explores concepts like data validation, defined names, and worksheet protection. Focuses on creating and managing structured data within Excel.Week 5Lesson 5Data AnalysisData analysis with Excel. Covers creating and using tables, pivot tables, and basic data analysis techniques. Focuses on structuring and summarizing data.Week 6Lesson 6Managing WorksheetsManaging multiple worksheets and workbooks. Discusses 3-D references, workbook linking, and creating custom templates. Focuses on working with complex Excel projects.Week 7Lesson 7Excel ApplicationsCreating Excel applications. Covers creating Excel forms, building logic with macros, and implementing data protection. Focuses on developing Excel-based applications for business use.Week 8Lesson 8Advanced Functions and LogicAdvanced functions and conditional logic in Excel. Introduces complex formulas like VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, IFERROR, and structured references. Focuses on enhancing data processing capabilities with Excel.Week 9Lesson 9Final Project & ReviewA comprehensive review of previous modules. Includes a final project requiring the application of various Excel skills, such as advanced functions, data analysis techniques, and worksheet management. This module encourages problem-solving, creativity, and a thorough understanding of Excel. Students will build a complete project from scratch, incorporating elements from all prior modules.
- Students will learn many aspects of Microsoft Excel, and find ways to quickly sort through large data sets. The goal of the course is not only to learn how to use the tools, but to understand the data, and what tools can be used to sort through it. We will cover a lot of topics in the course, with the goal that students will understand how to use Excel, and learn a lot of neat tips and tricks to make them data analysis ninjas.
I teach Excel, PowerBI, Sheets, and many other spreadsheet programs to various levels of students. I find that exploring data can be fun and exciting, particularly when you find unknown or new connections or conclusions you were unaware of in the data.

Students will need Microsoft Excel to follow along. Office versions 2016, 2019, 365, and other newer versions should all work. Older versions of Excel (2013, 2010, 2003, 2007) may be lacking some features but many or most of the formulas should still work.

Microsoft Excel is recommended for this course. It may be possible to complete most of the course using other software (such as Google Sheets) but in this course we will be working with Excel.
