Students will be provided with a weekly worksheet to help them reflect on and apply the information learned in class. These 12 worksheets will count for 60% of the final grade.
프로젝트
Students will be provided with a list of term projects, from which they will select one that sounds most interesting to them. Possible projects include an insect collection (requires purchase of collection supplies), a paper, or a video presentation. This project will count for 40% of the final grade.
문자 등급
Unless the parent requests to grade the student's work themselves, the instructor will grade all worksheets and the final project, assigning a letter grade at the end of the class. Feedback and a detailed breakdown of grades will be available upon request.

레벨 Beginner
Have you ever wondered how—and why—a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly? Do you regularly find yourself wishing you could identify the moving red dots on the begonias in your yard (spoiler alert: they’re probably clover mites)? Are you curious about the wide range of diseases that insects can spread to humans, animals, and plants? Whether you’re fascinated by the natural world, curious about the diversity of insects in your backyard, or aiming for a career in healthcare, this class will equip you with a valuable set of entomological knowledge and skills.

This 12-week self-paced course consists of twenty-four lectures, each 20-30 minutes, which delve into the fundamentals of insect classification, physiology, and ecology. Along the way, we will encounter many bizarre and fascinating ecological stories. Among other things, we will learn how honeybee societies function (the ultimate matriarchy), why mosquitoes are the most dangerous animals in the world (over a million human deaths per year), and which insects are vital and detrimental to agriculture (has the spotted lanternfly arrived in your county yet?). All lectures are pre-recorded, but students are welcome to reach out to the instructor with any questions they have about the material. Weekly homework assignments and guidelines for the term project will be provided.

Please see the class syllabus below for detailed descriptions of each lesson. This course can easily be completed in a single semester. The content is geared toward students in grades 8-12, and no background knowledge is required. No textbook is needed, although the instructor is happy to recommend additional resources for students who desire them. Late enrollment is permitted, and you are welcome to use the Ask a Question button if you need further information.

While lectures for this class are pre-recorded, the instructor will be available to answer questions and grade assignments. If feedback is requested, you may expect a reply within 3 business days.

그 외 세부 사항

학부모 가이드
Parents of students who choose to complete an insect collection as their term project will be responsible for their student's safety while collecting and handling insects. They are advised to make sure their student takes precautions against insect bites and stings. Students who are allergic to insect venom are strongly advised to select an alternative term project, or refrain from collecting insects that bite or sting.
사전 요구 사항
Knowledge of biology at the high school level is recommended but not required.
수업 자료
No textbook is needed for this class, although students with a deep interest in the subject may benefit from purchasing "Bugs Rule! An Introduction to the World of Insects" (Cranshaw and Redak, 2013). If students choose to make an insect collection for their final project, a collecting kit (approximately $60 if purchased from Home Science Tools) will need to be obtained. Access to a computer will be necessary to complete the weekly homework assignments.

프로필
교사 전문성 및 자격증
I graduated magna cum laude from Grove City College with a bachelor's degree in Biology and a minor in English, and I am currently working on a master's in Entomology. During college, I tutored biology students through my honor society (3 years), served as a Teaching Assistant for five introductory biology and life science classes (2.5 years), and conducted entomology and molecular biology research at my college, at the University of Georgia, and at the Navy's Entomology Center of Excellence.

In my current position, I regularly participate in outreach activities to educate the youth of Indian River County, FL, and St. Lucie County about pest control and mosquito-borne diseases. I am passionate about shaping the next generation of multidisciplinary biologists and innovative healthcare researchers by getting high school students interested in insect ecology, medical entomology, infectious disease biology, and applied biochemistry.
