This is a great class for beginner scientists because no prior knowledge is required. Students will be encouraged to share any knowledge or questions they may have. They will see a presentation filled with interesting videos and photos. In this class, students will find out who makes up Earth's clean-up crew! Students will gain an understanding of decomposition; what it is and why it's so vital. Students will find out that after scavengers begin the decomposition process, detritivores take over, with saprotrophs finishing the process. Students will find out exactly how the animals in these groups do their important jobs.
There will be discussion of carrion (dead animals), animal feces, and a few short videos of scavengers eating carrion.
