The solar system is one of my favorite things to talk about, especially with children! I have found the enthusiasm with this subject to be contagious, and nothing thrills me more than a student that gets excited about outer space. No matter how old I get, I still love discovering new things about it. Luckily for all of us, there seems to be a brand new discovery or event every single day! In this class, we will discuss the lesser known celestial objects and what separates them from the bigger planets. Students can expect a conversational style class with plenty of open discussion about all things space related. Our main focus will be the 5 confirmed dwarf planets (Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris), as well as the International Astronomical Union (or IAU- the people that make all the decisions). We will talk about the confusion that still exists with Pluto, why it has been up for debate for so many scientists, and why ultimately it is defined as a dwarf planet. Everyone's opinion is welcome, as I want all students to feel comfortable interacting with me, and each other. I will provide pictures of each so we can talk about their specific details and what makes them unique. We will learn fun facts about each dwarf planet, tell jokes, and I will issue a Blooket game after class that covers what we discussed (no student Blooket account needed!😉). Whether it's a one-on-one class or a group environment, my number one goal of every class is to inspire a love of learning new things.
