Students range anywhere from full-on drum kits all the way down to slapping their legs with their hands. It's not what you hit, it's when you hit it :) I could do lots of great work even on a little kid drum. Or buckets. Or pots and pans. Or a dictionary. Probably drum sticks would be the first investment. You can play with your hands or pencils or sticks from the yard, but nothing feels quite the same as drum sticks.
