In this 45 minute class session, we will begin with a short warm-up in which students get to use descriptive words to describe qualities of their favorite historical figure. We will act out the adjectives. The class will discuss the difference between creative drama and process drama. We will then start our time travel journey to the 1920's Harlem Renaissance by Dr.Triya reading aloud an excerpt of the American Girl Doll book "Claudie". We will define primary sources and discuss their importance. We will review pictures of the Harlem Renaissance from the Library of Congress website. Students will work in groups and create a skit about the life of Zora Neale Hurston or Louie Armstrong using their life biographies. Students create a human timeline. We will end the class by singing "It's a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.

The Harlem Renaissance highlights an era in African American history, discussions of access, discrimination, and racial justice in the United States may arise. In order to facilitate this discussion, Dr. Triya draws upon the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) resources for discussing race and anti-racism. NCSS articles can be found here: https://www.socialstudies.org/resources/resources-teaching-about-racism-anti-racism-and-human-rights. Dr. Triya also adhere's to all Outschool guidelines for such topics. Also, the class will emphasize importance of learning how to view history from multiple perspectives using a variety of resources.
