X-Men Magneto Testament and Maus by Art Speigelman are two graphic novels that shows the Holocaust in images and storytelling. Week 1Lesson 1Democracy and The HolocaustThe first class will cover the historical background of the Holocaust, including antisemitism, propaganda, race biology, and the concept of democracy (voting rights, equal treatment of the law, discrimination)Week 2Lesson 2Book Discussion-Maus IClass two will be a discussion book one of two in the Maus series. There will be questions in the Outschool classroom for the students to help them analyze the book.Week 3Lesson 3Human RightsWe will discuss human rights by using the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.Week 4Lesson 4Book Discussion-Maus IIClass four will be a discussion of the second book in the Maus series. Questions will be provided for this book.Week 5Lesson 5Book Discussion- X-Men TestamentClass five will be a discussion of the X-Men Testament and a comparison of the stories.
In 1939, my maternal grandfather was arrested by the Gestapo. He was very lucky being a Swedish citizen and was released the day after. From that day on he spoke passionately about the value of democracy and human rights. This has been passed down in my family for generations. Part of my masters degree from Lund University is political science and my final thesis was about how knowledge about World War Two and the Holocaust can influence students attitudes towards democracy and human rights.
