If the student is working on a character(s) with a tragic backstory, we might discuss how these violent and sad events will determine how they act in the story. Dark young adult and adult books and/or PG-13 or R rated movies with similar characters might be recommended to the student to help them explore their character's head space. The character's sexuality (heterosexual or LGBTQ+) might be defined if they are writing teen/adult characters with a romantic interest in the story.
